What Would Happen If Elon Musk Actually Bought Microsoft?
A viral meme claiming Elon Musk threatened to buy Microsoft just to fire Bill Gates is taking over the internet. It is fake but what would happen if he actually did?If you woke up tomorrow and discovered that Elon Musk had bought Microsoft, please, save your work before doing anything else.
Some of us have spent hours typing assignments, preparing reports and arranging Excel spreadsheets. We cannot afford to lose everything because a billionaire woke up and decided he wanted another company.
And honestly, after what happened to Twitter, can anyone blame us for being worried?
A meme circulating online has been entertaining people with the possibility of Musk buying Microsoft. It features an alleged conversation between Bill Gates and Musk.
Gates supposedly reminded Musk that he bought Tesla and Twitter, while SpaceX benefited from NASA technology and expertise, before declaring that he built Microsoft. Musk allegedly responded that Gates should not provoke him into buying Microsoft just to fire him.
It is hilarious, especially the idea of two billionaires arguing over a company worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Unfortunately, the conversation never happened. Neither man posted those messages, and the viral exchange was fabricated.
There is another little detail the meme conveniently ignores. Bill Gates left Microsoft's board in 2020.So, even if Musk bought the company tomorrow, there would be no reason to imagine Gates sitting in his former office waiting for a dismissal letter.
Still, the thought of Musk taking over Microsoft is too entertaining to ignore. We have seen what happened when he bought Twitter. Now imagine giving him control of the software sitting on practically every office desk.
Would Microsoft Become X-Soft?
Remember when Twitter became X? One day, people were tweeting, and the next, they were posting. The familiar blue bird disappeared, the name changed, and suddenly everyone had to adjust to a new identity.

Now imagine that happening to Microsoft.
Maybe Windows would become XOS, Microsoft Word becomes X-Word. Excel becomes X-cel, which is kind of chic though.
Maybe he would change Microsoft Teams to XConnect, but imagine opening your laptop on Monday morning, ready to finish a task, only to discover that the familiar Microsoft logo has disappeared.
You click Word, and the application asks you to sign in with your X account. The first thing he might do is to SHUT LINKEDIN DOWN as he has never failed to hide his dislike for the platform, calling it "unbearably cringe" and stating that he instantly loses respect for anyone who posts on LinkedIn
Of course, these are jokes, but Microsoft's products are deeply embedded in everyday life. Windows, Microsoft 365, Azure, Teams, Xbox and LinkedIn serve millions of individuals, businesses, schools and government institutions.
A major change in ownership could affect how these products are managed, priced and developed.
For a small business that relies on Microsoft software to manage its operations, even changes to subscriptions or support could become a headache.
Imagine having to explain to your boss that the accounting software has changed because the new owner wants a different direction.
What Would Happen to Microsoft's Employees?
Now, spare a thought for the employees.

Imagine working at Microsoft, enjoying an ordinary Tuesday evening, only to wake up the following morning and discover that Elon Musk is your new boss.
You check your email and find a company-wide announcement asking everyone to explain what they actually contribute to the business.
Musk has developed a reputation for making aggressive business decisions, demanding intense work commitments and restructuring companies after taking control. His takeover of Twitter involved substantial job cuts and changes to the company's operations.
Naturally, Microsoft employees would have questions. Would their departments survive? Would remote work policies change? Would existing management teams remain? Would some projects suddenly become unnecessary?
A new owner does not automatically mean everybody loses their job, but a company-wide restructuring could affect thousands of employees and the businesses that depend on them.
And imagine what happens during meetings.
You join Microsoft Teams on Monday morning, expecting to discuss quarterly targets. Your manager appears on the screen and announces that the meeting will now include an update on rocket technology. You have not even finished your presentation, and somebody is already discussing Mars.
LinkedIn might have its own problems. The platform already has enough people announcing that waking up at 4 a.m. changed their lives.
Add Musk's personality, public disagreements and appetite for controversy, and your professional networking feed could become an entirely different experience.
But Can Elon Musk Actually Buy Microsoft?

Before anyone starts practising how to use "X-Excel", there is a small problem: Microsoft is not exactly an item Musk can add to his shopping cart.
Microsoft is a publicly traded company. Its shares are owned by investors, and any potential takeover would involve negotiations, financing, shareholder interests and regulatory approval.
A deal of this magnitude would attract serious attention from competition authorities, particularly because Microsoft operates in several influential technology markets, including cloud computing, artificial intelligence, gaming and workplace software.
Microsoft's 2026 annual filing reported approximately 223,000 full-time employees. That gives you an idea of the scale of the business Musk would be attempting to acquire.
And what would he actually do with it?
Would he integrate Microsoft's artificial intelligence products with X? Would LinkedIn become more closely connected to his other businesses? Would Xbox users suddenly need an X account before playing their favourite games?
Nobody knows. There is no announced takeover, no confirmed negotiation and no evidence that Musk is planning to purchase Microsoft.
Interestingly, the meme also takes liberties with the history of these companies. Gates co-founded Microsoft with Paul Allen in 1975. Musk did not establish Tesla, although he became an early investor in 2004 and eventually became its chief executive. He founded SpaceX in 2002, which has since developed major partnerships and contracts with NASA.

Musk's purchase of Twitter and subsequent rebranding to X are real. The alleged conversation with Gates is not.
For now, Microsoft remains under the leadership of Satya Nadella, its chairman and chief executive. Gates is no longer on its board, and nobody needs to start transferring their documents to another platform.
But if Musk ever decides that Microsoft belongs in his collection of companies, I have just one request: please leave Word alone.
Some of us are still trying to finish assignments, submit reports and prepare presentations. We have enough problems already, and we don't have time to start adjusting to new programming and updates.
