Bandits Attack Niger Community, Kill Village Head and Four Others
In a fresh wave of violence, suspected bandits killed the village head of Galla, Ahmed Yusuf, and four others in Niger State's Borgu LGA, also abducting several residents. This attack intensifies security concerns in an area already plagued by recent terrorist incidents, including the abduction of worshippers from a mosque.
Suspected bandits have attacked Galla village in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, reportedly killing village head Ahmed Yusuf and four other residents. Sources said Yusuf was killed inside his palace, while an unspecified number of residents were abducted during the attack.
The incident comes days after suspected terrorists attacked communities in the area, including a mosque in Kpenya during Juma’at prayers, where several worshippers were reportedly abducted.
Yusuf, a retired army master warrant officer, was reportedly known to have warned suspected bandits to stay away from his community, although claims that the warning triggered the attack could not be independently verified.
The killings add to a worsening pattern of violence across Borgu and communities along the Kainji Lake corridor, where previous attacks have resulted in deaths, abductions and the destruction of homes and public facilities. In June, suspected terrorists reportedly attacked Pissa, while nine bodies were recovered along the Wawa-Lumma road in August following an attack on travellers.
The violence has also affected schools and displaced residents, with the Central Primary School in Dekara reportedly burnt despite claims that communities had paid a ₦10 million protection levy to the attackers.
Following earlier attacks on Gidan-Zana and Kpenya, the Niger State Government ordered a joint security operation to track the perpetrators, rescue abducted residents and restore peace in the affected communities.
However, there was no official confirmation from the Niger State Government, police or other security agencies of the reported deaths in Galla at the time of reporting, while the identities of the four additional victims and the circumstances surrounding their deaths remained unverified.
