Super Falcons Reign Supreme: Nigeria Celebrates Historic 10th WAFCON Title
)
The Super Falcons of Nigeria have once again etched their names in history, clinching their record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. This monumental achievement came after a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory against host nation Morocco in the final match, often referred to as 'Mission X' by the team.
The decisive final, held at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, was a dramatic affair. Morocco started strong, taking an early lead with Ghiziane Chebbak scoring in the 13th minute, followed by Sanaa Mssoudy doubling their advantage in the 24th minute. Morocco went into halftime with a two-goal cushion, seemingly in control. However, the Super Falcons, displaying incredible resilience and the renowned Nigerian spirit, mounted a spectacular second-half resurgence. Head coach Justin Madugu's tactical changes, including bringing on Rinsola Babajide and Jennifer Echegini, injected new energy into the attack. Esther Okoronkwo initiated the comeback by converting a penalty in the 64th minute. Just seven minutes later, Okoronkwo assisted Folashade Ijamilusi for the equalizer in the 71st minute. The decisive goal came in the 88th minute when Okoronkwo once again turned provider, setting up Jennifer Echegini for the match-winner. Even legendary striker Asisat Oshoala was brought on to help close out the game, securing the historic win.
The victory sparked nationwide celebrations and drew commendations from various prominent figures. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was among the first to congratulate the team, stating on social media, "Congratulations to our incredible Super Falcons on their well-deserved WAFCON victory. This win is a reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together." He praised their performance as a "flawless 10 out of 10," emphasizing how they made the country proud.
First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also extended her heartfelt congratulations, lauding the team's resilience and calling them "ambassadors of Nigerian excellence." She highlighted that the trophy was not just another prize, but "a testament to your hard work, consistency, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit." Senator Tinubu proudly declared that the Super Falcons had once again "lifted the pride of our dear nation, Nigeria and cemented your place as Queens of African football."
NFF President Ibrahim Gusau expressed his deep emotional pride, hailing the victory as symbolic of the Nigerian spirit. He remarked, "Our girls rose from the ‘dead’, as they say, and fought to victory. This was an extraordinary performance. I congratulate them for their resilience, doggedness, patriotism, and the blatant display of the well-known Nigerian spirit." Gusau went on to articulate his belief that this WAFCON triumph would serve as a significant morale booster for the men's national team, the Super Eagles, as they prepare to resurrect their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. The Super Eagles are set to face Rwanda on September 6 and South Africa on September 9.
Adding a touch of flair to the celebrations, Super Falcons defender Michelle Alozie delivered a witty post-match jab at the Moroccan fans. Throughout the tense final, Moroccan supporters had employed a controversial tactic, shining laser lights onto Nigerian players, particularly targeting Esther Okoronkwo. Alozie, in a lively Snapchat video with Okoronkwo, confidently mocked these efforts with the cheeky caption: “Their lasers didn’t work.” This message perfectly encapsulated the team's unshakable composure and winning spirit despite the hostile atmosphere. Additionally, legendary striker Asisat Oshoala took to Instagram to acknowledge the crucial contributions of teammates Oluwatosin Demehin and Deborah Abiodun, underscoring their profound influence on her 'Mission X' journey. The Super Falcons will return home as undisputed African champions, having demonstrated not only their exceptional skill but also their mental fortitude in the face of adversity.
