Super Falcons Secure Historic 10th WAFCON Title, Sparking Celebration and Debate!

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have etched their names further into history by clinching a record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. Their triumph came after a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory against host nation Morocco in the final. The match, played at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, saw Nigeria overcome a two-goal deficit, showcasing remarkable resilience and the indomitable Nigerian spirit.

Morocco had a strong start, with Ghiziane Chebbak scoring in the 13th minute and Sanaa Mssoudy adding a second in the 24th minute, giving them a 2-0 lead at halftime. However, tactical changes by head coach Justin Madugu, including bringing on Rinsola Babajide and Jennifer Echegini, revitalized the Super Falcons' attack. Esther Okoronkwo initiated the comeback by converting a penalty in the 64th minute. She then provided an assist for Folashade Ijamilusi to equalize in the 71st minute. With the introduction of five-time CAF Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala, Nigeria pressed for the winner. Okoronkwo once again played a decisive role, setting up Jennifer Echegini for the winning goal in the 88th minute, sealing a dramatic 3-2 victory.

The historic win, often referred to as "Mission X," prompted widespread celebrations and commendations from across Nigeria. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu quickly congratulated the team, stating, "This win is a reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together. You’ve shown the world the strength and spirit of Nigerian football, and I celebrate you wholeheartedly. A flawless 10 out of 10 performance. We are beyond proud." First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also extended her heartfelt congratulations, praising the team's hard work, consistency, and resilience. She remarked that the victory was "not just another trophy; it is a testament to your hard work, consistency, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit," and that the team had "cemented your place as Queens of African football."

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau highlighted the victory's broader implications, expressing confidence that the Super Falcons' success would ignite the Super Eagles' ambition in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. Gusau hailed the win as symbolic of the Nigerian spirit, noting how the girls "rose from the ‘dead’... and fought to victory," an "extraordinary performance" that exemplified resilience, doggedness, and patriotism. The Super Eagles are set to resume their qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa in September.

Even legendary striker Asisat Oshoala, a part of the victorious squad, took to social media to credit teammates Oluwatosin Demehin and Deborah Abiodun, stating, "Can’t tell my Mission X story without these two."

Despite this continental glory and an unbeaten run, the Super Falcons' global standing in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings remains a point of contention. Football analyst Joba challenged FIFA to revamp its ranking system, arguing that Nigeria, currently ranked 36th (and still Africa's top team), is undoubtedly better than 35 other nations globally. Critics suggest the current Elo rating system, which emphasizes historical results and weights recent performance, does not adequately reward breakthrough performances or regional dominance, calling for more dynamic metrics to reflect evolving power shifts in women's football. The debate continues as Nigeria celebrates its latest achievement, with many hoping for a reevaluation of the ranking system before the next FIFA ranking release scheduled for early August 2025.
