Unstoppable Queens: Super Falcons Secure 10th WAFCON Title, Sparking National Celebration
)
The Super Falcons of Nigeria have etched their names in history by clinching a record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, following a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory against hosts Morocco. The final match, held at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, saw the Falcons overcome an initial two-goal deficit. Morocco quickly took the lead with goals from Ghiziane Chebbak in the 13th minute and Sanaa Mssoudy in the 24th minute, heading into halftime with a comfortable cushion. However, a spirited second-half resurgence, ignited by tactical changes from head coach Justin Madugu, turned the tide. Madugu introduced Rinsola Babajide and Jennifer Echegini for increased attacking speed. Esther Okoronkwo initiated the comeback, converting a penalty in the 64th minute and then assisting Folashade Ijamilusi for the equalizer in the 71st minute. The dramatic match-winner came in the 88th minute, with Okoronkwo once again providing an assist, this time to Jennifer Echegini, securing the Super Falcons' historic triumph.
The monumental victory sparked nationwide celebrations, with prominent figures quick to offer their congratulations. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hailed the team's achievement in a heartfelt social media post, stating, "Congratulations to our incredible Super Falcons on their well-deserved WAFCON victory. This win is a reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together." He further lauded their "flawless 10 out of 10 performance," celebrating the team for showcasing the "strength and spirit of Nigerian football." Similarly, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, extended her congratulations, praising the team's resilience and calling them "ambassadors of Nigerian excellence." She noted that the win was "not just another trophy; it is a testament to your hard work, consistency, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit," affirming that they have "once again lifted the pride of our dear nation, Nigeria and cemented your place as Queens of African football."
Beyond the immediate celebrations, the victory also carries significant implications for Nigerian football. Ibrahim Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), expressed confidence that the Super Falcons' win would provide a crucial boost to the Super Eagles' 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. Visibly emotional after the match, Gusau highlighted the team's "resilience, doggedness, patriotism, and the blatant display of the well-known Nigerian spirit," believing that this "victory will have positive implications for the men." The Super Eagles are set to resume their qualifying campaign with critical matches against Rwanda on September 6 and South Africa on September 9, fixtures that could define their World Cup hopes.
The Super Falcons' indomitable spirit was also showcased in defender Michelle Alozie's witty post-match celebration. During the tense final, Moroccan fans resorted to shining laser lights onto Nigerian players, notably targeting Esther Okoronkwo. In a playful jab at their rivals, Alozie took to Snapchat to mock these efforts, posting a lively video with Okoronkwo celebrating their victory, captioned simply: “Their lasers didn’t work.” This message perfectly captured the team’s unshakable composure and resilience despite the hostile atmosphere and unconventional distractions. Additionally, legendary striker Asisat Oshoala, a part of the victorious squad, credited teammates Oluwatosin Demehin and Deborah Abiodun for their crucial roles in her WAFCON journey, expressing her gratitude for their profound influence.
However, the victory has also reignited debates surrounding the FIFA Women’s World Ranking system. Football analyst and Pulse Sports Nigeria’s managing editor, Joba, openly challenged FIFA to revamp its ranking methodology. Despite securing their 10th WAFCON title undefeated and being ranked first in Africa, Nigeria remains at 36th globally in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings, a position that many critics argue fails to reflect the team’s true strength and recent dominant performance. Joba asserted on X (formerly Twitter), “FIFA you need to find a new way to calculate the women’s football ranking because I don’t think there are 35 teams in the world that are better than the @NGSuper_Falcons.” The current Elo rating system, which is updated quarterly and weights recent performance, is being scrutinized for its slow pace of adjustment and its perceived inability to adequately reward breakthrough performances or regional dominance, fueling calls for more dynamic metrics to better reflect the evolving landscape of women’s football. As Nigeria celebrates its continental success, the push for ranking reform continues, with the next FIFA ranking release eagerly awaited in early August 2025.
