Nigeria's Super Falcons Secure Historic 10th WAFCON Title in Thrilling Mission X Victory!

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have once again etched their names in African football history, securing a record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. In a thrilling final held at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, the Nigerian team staged a remarkable 3-2 comeback victory against host nation Morocco, a triumph widely celebrated across the nation as “Mission X” completed.

The final match was a testament to the Super Falcons' resilience. Morocco, playing in front of their home crowd, started strong, with Ghiziane Chebbak scoring in the 13th minute and Sanaa Mssoudy doubling their lead in the 24th minute, putting Nigeria down by two goals at halftime. Despite the challenging atmosphere, which included Moroccan fans shining laser lights onto Nigerian players, notably Esther Okoronkwo, the Super Falcons refused to yield. Head coach Justin Madugu's strategic substitutions, bringing on Rinsola Babajide and Jennifer Echegini, injected crucial speed into the attack. The comeback began in the 64th minute when Esther Okoronkwo converted a penalty. Okoronkwo continued her influential performance, assisting Folashade Ijamilusi for the equalizer in the 71st minute. With five-time CAF Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala also brought into the game, Okoronkwo once again proved decisive, setting up Jennifer Echegini for the match-winning goal in the 88th minute, sealing the dramatic 3-2 victory.

The historic win garnered widespread praise from prominent Nigerian figures. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu swiftly joined the nationwide celebration, congratulating the “incredible Super Falcons” on social media. He lauded the victory as a “reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together,” adding, “A flawless 10 out of 10 performance. We are beyond proud.” This congratulatory message followed his recent international spotlight appearance with basketball icon LeBron James.

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also extended heartfelt congratulations, praising the team's resilience and calling them “ambassadors of Nigerian excellence.” In her social media post, she stated, “Your resounding 3-2 victory is indeed remarkable and commendable. It is not just another trophy; it is a testament to your hard work, consistency, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit.” She thanked the team for lifting the nation's pride and inspiring millions.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau expressed immense pride, hailing the victory as “symbolic of the Nigerian spirit.” He noted that the team “rose from the ‘dead’” and fought to victory, showcasing “resilience, doggedness, patriotism.” Gusau further articulated his confidence that this triumph would “fuel the men’s national team,” the Super Eagles, in their ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. The Super Eagles are set to resume their qualifiers with a home game against Rwanda on September 6, followed by an away clash against South Africa on September 9, fixtures Gusau hopes will benefit from the Falcons' inspiring example.

The players themselves also shared their thoughts on the monumental achievement. Defender Michelle Alozie, in a witty post-match troll on Snapchat, celebrated alongside Esther Okoronkwo with the caption “Their lasers didn’t work,” playfully mocking the Moroccan fans' attempts to distract them with laser lights. This act perfectly encapsulated the team's unshakable composure. Meanwhile, legendary striker Asisat Oshoala took to Instagram to credit teammates Oluwatosin Demehin and Deborah Abiodun, stating, “Can’t tell my Mission X story without these two,” highlighting their crucial roles in her WAFCON journey.

With this hard-fought 10th WAFCON title, the Super Falcons reinforce their status as the queens of African football, demonstrating exceptional skill, unwavering focus, and an indomitable spirit that has once again made Nigeria proud.
