Mission Accomplished: Super Falcons Secure Tenth WAFCON Crown Amid National Celebration

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have etched their name in history, securing a record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. This monumental achievement came after a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory against host nation Morocco in the final, a game many have dubbed 'Mission X' for its dramatic turnaround.

The final match, held at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, saw Morocco get off to a fast start. Ghiziane Chebbak opened the scoring for Morocco as early as the 13th minute, followed by Sanaa Mssoudy in the 24th minute, giving the home team a commanding two-goal lead at halftime. However, the Super Falcons, under head coach Justin Madugu, orchestrated a spectacular second-half resurgence. Substitutions, including Rinsola Babajide and Jennifer Echegini, injected crucial speed into the attack. The comeback began in the 64th minute when Esther Okoronkwo converted a penalty. Okoronkwo continued to be a pivotal force, assisting Folashade Ijamilusi for the equalizer in the 71st minute. With the game poised, Madugu introduced five-time CAF Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala. The winning goal came in the 88th minute, with Okoronkwo once again providing the assist, this time for Jennifer Echegini, sealing Nigeria's 3-2 triumph.

The historic win has sparked widespread celebration and commendation across Nigeria. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was among the first to congratulate the team, stating in a heartfelt social media post, "Congratulations to our incredible Super Falcons on their well-deserved WAFCON victory. This win is a reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together. To the players, coaches, and everyone who worked behind the scenes, thank you for making the country proud once again. You’ve shown the world the strength and spirit of Nigerian football, and I celebrate you wholeheartedly. A flawless 10 out of 10 performance. We are beyond proud."

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also extended her heartfelt congratulations to the Super Falcons, praising their resilience and the 'indomitable Nigerian spirit'. In a post on her official social media account, she highlighted the team as "ambassadors of Nigerian excellence, inspiring millions across the world." She added, "Your resounding 3-2 victory is indeed remarkable and commendable. It is not just another trophy; it is a testament to your hard work, consistency, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit. You have once again lifted the pride of our dear nation, Nigeria and cemented your place as Queens of African football."

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau hailed the victory as symbolic of the Nigerian spirit, describing it as an "extraordinary performance." He congratulated the team for their "resilience, doggedness, patriotism, and the blatant display of the well-known Nigerian spirit." Gusau also expressed confidence that the Super Falcons' win would significantly fuel the men’s national team, the Super Eagles, in their fight to resurrect their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. Nigeria currently sits outside qualification spots, and Gusau believes this victory can trigger a crucial mindset shift ahead of their upcoming games against Rwanda on September 6th and South Africa on September 9th.

From the players' perspective, legendary striker Asisat Oshoala took to Instagram to credit teammates Oluwatosin Demehin and Deborah Abiodun for their crucial roles in her 2024 WAFCON journey, posting, "Love them scatter. Can’t tell my Mission X story without these two." The collective effort and individual brilliance combined to secure this landmark achievement for Nigerian football.
