Unstoppable Queens: Super Falcons Secure Historic 10th WAFCON Title in Thrilling Mission X

The Super Falcons of Nigeria achieved a historic feat by clinching their record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. This triumph came after a sensational 3-2 comeback victory against host nation Morocco in the final, a match filled with drama and remarkable resilience.

The final, held at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, saw the Super Falcons trailing 2-0 at halftime. Morocco's Ghiziane Chebbak scored in the 13th minute, followed by Sanaa Mssoudy in the 24th minute, putting immense pressure on the Nigerian side. However, a tactical shift by head coach Justin Madugu, including the introduction of Rinsola Babajide and Jennifer Echegini, sparked the dramatic turnaround. Esther Okoronkwo initiated the comeback by converting a penalty in the 64th minute. She then provided the assist for Folashade Ijamilusi's equalizer in the 71st minute. The match-winning goal came in the 88th minute, with Okoronkwo again assisting Jennifer Echegini, sealing Nigeria's 'Mission X' in spectacular fashion. Throughout the tense final, Moroccan fans employed a controversial tactic, shining laser lights onto Nigerian players, notably targeting Okoronkwo's eyes, a distraction the team overcame with remarkable composure.

The victory was met with widespread celebration and commendation from Nigerian dignitaries. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed his heartfelt congratulations, stating, "This win is a reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together. You’ve shown the world the strength and spirit of Nigerian football, and I celebrate you wholeheartedly. A flawless 10 out of 10 performance. We are beyond proud." First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also praised the team's resilience, calling them "ambassadors of Nigerian excellence" and highlighting the win as "a testament to your hard work, consistency, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit." She added, "You have once again lifted the pride of our dear nation, Nigeria and cemented your place as Queens of African football."

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau hailed the victory as symbolic of the Nigerian spirit, noting the team "rose from the ‘dead’... and fought to victory." Gusau expressed hope that this "extraordinary performance" would fuel the men's national team, the Super Eagles, in their ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. He underscored the lesson that "in sport and in life, it is never over until it is over," as the Super Eagles prepare for crucial matches against Rwanda and South Africa in September.

Players also shared their sentiments. Defender Michelle Alozie, in a witty post-match troll on Snapchat, directly addressed the controversial laser lights used by Moroccan fans with the cheeky caption: "Their lasers didn’t work," celebrating the team's unshakable composure. Legendary striker Asisat Oshoala, a part of the victorious squad, took to Instagram to credit teammates Oluwatosin Demehin and Deborah Abiodun, stating, "Can’t tell my Mission X story without these two," acknowledging their significant contributions to the WAFCON journey. This historic win further solidifies Nigeria's unbeaten run in WAFCON finals, reinforcing their dominance in African women's football.
