Super Falcons Seize 10th WAFCON Title, Oshoala Faces Retirement Rumours

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have achieved a monumental feat, clinching their record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. This historic triumph came after a spectacular 3-2 comeback victory against host nation Morocco in a thrilling final match.

The final, dubbed 'Mission X', saw Morocco take an early lead at the Stade Olympique de Rabat. Ghiziane Chebbak opened the scoring for the hosts in the 13th minute, followed by Sanaa Mssoudy who doubled Morocco's advantage in the 24th minute, sending them into halftime with a comfortable two-goal cushion.

However, the Super Falcons staged a dramatic second-half resurgence. Head coach Justin Madugu introduced Rinsola Babajide and Jennifer Echegini to inject speed into the attack, a move that quickly paid dividends. In the 64th minute, Esther Okoronkwo successfully converted a penalty, pulling one goal back for Nigeria. Okoronkwo continued to be instrumental, providing an assist for the equalizer in the 71st minute, scored by Folashade Ijamilusi. The relentless Nigerian squad, with Five-time CAF Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala also brought on to close out the game, sealed their victory in the 88th minute when Okoronkwo again assisted, this time for Jennifer Echegini, who netted the late winner.

Following this incredible victory, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was among the first to extend his congratulations. In a heartfelt social media post, Governor Sanwo-Olu lauded the Super Falcons, stating, "Congratulations to our incredible Super Falcons on their well-deserved WAFCON victory. This win is a reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together. To the players, coaches, and everyone who worked behind the scenes, thank you for making the country proud once again. You’ve shown the world the strength and spirit of Nigerian football, and I celebrate you wholeheartedly. A flawless 10 out of 10 performance. We are beyond proud."

Legendary striker Asisat Oshoala, a part of the victorious squad, also took to her Instagram to express gratitude to her teammates Oluwatosin Demehin and Deborah Abiodun. Oshoala highlighted their crucial roles in her WAFCON journey, posting, "Love them scatter. Can’t tell my Mission X story without these two," alongside a picture of the duo, emphasizing their profound influence on the team's success.
