OpenAI Teams with Reliance to Power AI Search on JioHotstar

OpenAI has forged a strategic partnership with Reliance to integrate AI-powered conversational search capabilities into the Indian conglomerate's popular streaming service, JioHotstar. This innovative feature, powered by OpenAI's robust API, is designed to revolutionize how users discover entertainment by enabling them to search for movies, shows, and live sports using natural text and voice prompts. The system will support multiple languages and provide personalized recommendations tailored to individual user preferences and viewing history, aiming to enhance the overall entertainment experience.
This collaboration marks a significant expansion of OpenAI's footprint within India, a country that boasts over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users. Reflecting its growing commitment to the South Asian market, OpenAI has announced plans to establish new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, adding to its existing presence in New Delhi. The partnership itself was officially unveiled at the prestigious India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, an event that gathered prominent industry leaders, including OpenAI's Sam Altman, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, and Google's Sundar Pichai.
Beyond the in-app search functionality, the partnership is set to extend further by surfacing JioHotstar recommendations directly within ChatGPT. This forward-thinking approach transforms the integration into a sophisticated two-way discovery layer, rather than merely an isolated in-app feature. Users searching for entertainment through ChatGPT will now receive contextually relevant suggestions and direct deep links into JioHotstar’s extensive content catalogue, streamlining content access and discovery.
The move by OpenAI and Reliance is aligned with a broader industry trend where streaming and television platforms are increasingly experimenting with conversational interfaces to improve user engagement. For instance, Netflix announced in May 2025 that it was testing a new search experience utilizing OpenAI’s ChatGPT to assist viewers in finding content through natural language. Similarly, Google introduced Gemini-powered discovery features for its Google TV platform in November, highlighting the growing adoption of AI in content recommendation.
Fidji Simo, Chief Executive of applications at OpenAI, articulated the vision behind the partnership, stating that it aims to deliver more personalized AI experiences across entertainment and live sports. She emphasized that the goal is to empower viewers to transition “from curiosity to context” through seamless, natural interactions. Uday Shankar, Vice Chairperson of JioStar, echoed this sentiment, noting that embedding AI into content discovery will fundamentally reshape how audiences find and engage with programming. The companies have confirmed that the rollout of these AI features will encompass both live and on-demand formats, ensuring comprehensive coverage.
The JioHotstar partnership is a cornerstone of OpenAI’s larger “OpenAI for India” initiative, a strategic endeavor to deepen its presence in the nation through a series of infrastructure, enterprise, and education collaborations. Other key initiatives under this program include collaborations with the Tata Group for developing AI-ready data centers and facilitating enterprise deployments, alongside agreements with other significant Indian companies such as Pine Labs, Eternal, and MakeMyTrip, underscoring OpenAI's commitment to fostering AI innovation across various sectors in India.
