Tragic Loss: Rapper Lil Poppa's Cause of Death Confirmed as Suicide

Janarious Mykel Wheeler, known professionally as rapper Lil Poppa, tragically passed away at the age of 25. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office officially ruled his cause of death a suicide due to a gunshot wound to the head, following an autopsy conducted on Thursday, February 19th. His death occurred on Wednesday.
The news of Lil Poppa's passing led to a significant outpouring of grief and support from the hip-hop community. Notable artists such as Boosie Badazz, Mozzy, Dej Loaf, and Nardo Wick shared heartfelt tributes mourning the Jacksonville rapper.
Just days before his death, Lil Poppa had released his single “Out of Town Bae” on February 13th. He had also been on tour in 2025 and had a Birthday Bash show scheduled for March in New Orleans, indicating active musical endeavors and future plans.
In 2022, Lil Poppa signed with Yo Gotti’s CMG Records, through which he released several projects, including his “Almost Normal Again” album last August. CMG Records released a statement on Thursday, expressing profound sadness: “We are stunned and devastated by the loss of our beloved family member, Janarious ‘Lil Poppa’ Wheeler. Poppa was more than just a talented artist — he was an ambitious young man with depth beyond his years and endless potential. Our love for him knew no bounds.”
The label's statement further praised his artistry, adding, “He was one of those rare artists who thoughtfully poured his pain, growth and truth into his art. His passion and authenticity connected and inspired fans from all walks of life. This is truly a heartbreaking loss for everyone who knew and loved him. Please keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. Poppa, we promise to uphold your legacy with honor and respect. We are all better because of you. Long Live Lil Poppa.”
Throughout his career, Lil Poppa achieved notable success on the Billboard charts. His project “Blessed, I Guess” reached No. 160 on the Billboard 200 in May 2021, and his album “Under Investigation 3” charted at No. 194 in May 2022.
