Moniepoint Just Acquired Orda and It Is Playing a Much Bigger Game Than Payments

Something significant just happened in Nigeria's fintech space, and it deserves more attention than a press release.

Moniepoint, the Visa-backed Nigerian fintech unicorn, has acquired Orda, a cloud-based restaurant management platform, in a deal that signals the company is no longer content being the infrastructure quietly powering transactions in the background.

It wants to be the operating system that African businesses cannot function without.

Orda will be rebranded Moniebook for Restaurants and folded into Moniebook, Moniepoint's broader business management platform.

The transition will be gradual, Orda continues operating as a standalone business until full integration is completed in the coming months, but the direction is unmistakable.

Approximately 25 members of Orda's team have joined Moniepoint, and the deal's financial value, while undisclosed, follows a $4.5 million seed round Orda raised back in 2022.

The acquisition covers only Orda's Nigerian operations for now, leaving its Kenyan arm untouched, though the door to a broader consolidation remains deliberately open.

Why a Restaurant Platform? Why Now?

This is the question worth sitting with, because on the surface, a fintech company acquiring a restaurant management tool sounds like an unusual pivot.

It is not, it is a calculated bet on one of Nigeria's most active economic sectors.

Nigeria's food service market is projected to hit $12.37 billion this year and Moniepoint's own data tells the story in real numbers, Nigerians spent ₦8 billion daily at restaurants in 2025 using Moniepoint's payment infrastructure alone.

The transaction volume is already there. What is missing was ownership of the full workflow that generates it.

Here is the problem Moniepoint is solving: in most Nigerian restaurants today, the sales process is fractured. A cashier logs an order in one system. Payment happens on a separate point-of-sale terminal.

Reconciliation is done manually afterward, creating inefficiencies, errors, and the ever-present risk of payment leakage through unofficial PoS terminals or misdirected transfers.

It is a logistical headache that restaurant owners have simply accepted as the cost of doing business.

Moniepoint's integration collapses that entire workflow. Under the new setup, a cashier records a sale inside Moniebook for Restaurants. The customer pays through a Moniepoint terminal.

The system automatically confirms the payment, closes the transaction, and reconciles everything in real time, no manual crosschecking, no end-of-day errors, no money disappearing into untracked channels. It all flows directly into the merchant's account and onto the Moniebook dashboard.

Orda was not a random choice. The platform already powers operations for major chains under the Eat'N'Go group, which runs Domino's Pizza and Cold Stone Creamery franchises in Nigeria and processed over 5.2 million transactions in 2024 across more than 1,075 restaurants.

It also already integrates with food delivery aggregators like Chowdeck and Glovo, allowing restaurants to receive and manage delivery orders directly inside their dashboard.

Those integrations are expected to expand significantly within Moniepoint's ecosystem.

What to Watch Out For With What Moniepoint Is Doing

The strategic ceiling here extends well beyond restaurants. The transaction data generated through this integrated system, payment volumes, inventory turnover, sales patterns, creates a financial intelligence layer that could eventually power working capital loans tailored specifically to restaurant performance.

If Moniepoint knows exactly how much a restaurant makes on jollof rice on a Friday, it can build a lending product around that knowledge with a precision that generic banks simply cannot match.

And restaurants, Moniepoint has made clear, are only the first sector. The company has signalled plans to build or acquire industry-specific software layers across other verticals as it scales Moniebook into a full operating system for African businesses.

In 2025 alone, Moniepoint processed ₦412 trillion in transaction volumes. Moniebook has already logged over 12.6 million sales transactions since its launch.

The Orda acquisition increases the number of unique businesses on the platform by close to 50%. The numbers are already significant and the ambition is larger.

If Moniepoint succeeds in embedding its payment infrastructure directly inside the software businesses use daily, switching providers becomes not just inconvenient, it becomes structurally difficult.

That is not a payments company and that is an operating system. And Africa's businesses are just beginning to realise they are already inside it.
