Dramatic Standoff Ends in Arrest: Armed Police Lock Down Bury Estate

An estate in Bury was locked down by armed police and negotiators on Tuesday, March 31, following reports of an incident where a man allegedly brandished a gun. The dramatic events unfolded on Limefield Brow, Walmersley, leading to the arrest of a man in his 70s on suspicion of firearms offences. This major emergency response was initiated after officers received a 'concern for welfare' report at approximately 10:30 am, indicating a man was hurt.

Witnesses described a scene of horror and chaos as numerous emergency services, including armed police, paramedics, negotiators, and firefighters, converged on the property. Drones were also reportedly used as part of the extensive operation. Although unconfirmed by Greater Manchester Police, witness reports suggested a man 'pointed a gun' at officers, a claim corroborated by a source close to the situation who told the Manchester Evening News that a firearm was brandished. The weapon was later seized by authorities and deemed 'not viable' after a search concluded by Tuesday evening.

During the operation, two carers who were present at the scene were safely removed. A cordon was established, remaining in place until around 2 pm. Neighbours expressed their shock, with one stating, "It's a bit freaky when you see about 10 armed police around the estate. You don't expect people to have a gun. I've never seen anything like this before." Another resident, Joshua Higman, commented on the "madness" and "chaotic" atmosphere, recalling being told to stay inside his house.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed the arrest of the man in his 70s, who remains in custody for questioning. The police advised that an increased presence of officers might remain in the area as the investigation continues. This incident in Bury occurred just a day after a separate, significant six-hour armed police stand-off in nearby Radcliffe. On Monday, March 30, officers responded to reports of a disturbance at Sunflower Massage on Stand Lane around 2:15 pm, where a suspect allegedly made threats with a bladed article. A 26-year-old man was arrested in connection with that incident and also remained in custody on Tuesday.
