Snipers at Salford Park: Unraveling the Mystery of Mandley Park Incident

An urgent police operation unfolded at Mandley Park in Higher Broughton, Salford, just before midday, following reports of a 'suspicious' man. Within minutes of the alarm, images and videos began circulating on social media, showing a man on his knees, surrounded by armed police. Officers had been scrambled to the scene after the man was spotted in the outdoor gym area, wearing a t-shirt, jogging bottoms, trainers, and what appeared to be a black padded vest.

The incident took place in the heart of Salford's Jewish community, a location that had experienced a deadly terror attack just five months prior. The park was particularly busy with families, mothers with pushchairs, and children playing, as many schools had shut early ahead of the Sabbath. This context of heightened anxiety within the community contributed to the rapid spread of fear and misinformation.

Armed officers, some with covered faces and rifles, swarmed the park from all directions. A police helicopter hovered overhead, and multiple guns were trained on the man, who was ordered to kneel down, place his hands over his head, and remove the vest. Concurrent with the police response, posts from accounts with thousands of followers, alongside frequently forwarded WhatsApp messages, falsely claimed the man was wearing a 'suicide vest' and possessed a gun. Onlookers in shared videos expressed fears for their safety, believing the man had a bomb or 'pack' attached to him.

However, the intense situation was quickly clarified as a false alarm. Upon examination, the 'black padded vest' was determined to be nothing more than a weighted gym vest the man was using for exercise. Furthermore, a cable he had with him, initially feared to be 'wires,' turned out to be a simple skipping rope. Videos later showed the man being calmly escorted from the park by officers.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) issued a statement confirming the incident was a false alarm, stating, "Officers attended and quickly established that the individual was wearing a weighted gym vest and carrying a skipping rope while exercising at an outdoor gym. This was a false alarm and there is no threat to the wider community." Police remained in the park for hours afterwards to reassure the community, patrolling past the scores of predominantly Jewish children still playing in the sun.

The Community Security Trust (CST), a charity protecting Jewish communities, and the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester both expressed gratitude for GMP's swift and professional response. The Jewish Representative Council noted, "This incident is indicative of the levels of anxiety currently being faced by Jewish people across the world." Despite the initial chaos and panic, calm was quickly restored, with children continuing to play, highlighting the effective and reassuring presence of law enforcement.
