Bayelsa Rocked: Deputy Governor Collapses and Dies in Tragic Incident

Reports emerged from Bayelsa State concerning its Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, following an incident where he reportedly collapsed. According to multiple sources, the Deputy Governor collapsed on Thursday, December 11, while in his office around 1:30 PM, leading to an immediate emergency response.
He was subsequently rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Yenagoa. Eyewitnesses described him as being in a serious condition upon arrival at the hospital's emergency unit. Following his admission, conflicting reports regarding his status began to circulate.
Some news outlets, including DAILY POST and Vanguard, reported that Senator Ewhrudjakpo had died at the age of 60. Vanguard, in particular, stated that he was confirmed dead after being rushed to FMC Yenagoa. However, other accounts from Yenagoa residents and sources within the hospital indicated that he was in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with some reports suggesting he had been stabilized while others maintained he remained critical.
As of the time these reports were filed, the Bayelsa State Government and his family had not released any official information or statement confirming his death or providing details on his health condition. Attempts to reach his media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, for comment were unsuccessful. Security operatives have since cordoned off the hospital premises, and top government officials have visited to express their concern.
Sources close to the Deputy Governor pointed to his demanding work schedule, describing him as a “workaholic” who rarely found time to rest, suggesting this could be a contributing factor to his health issues. There were also suggestions that the incident might be related to a cardiac emergency. Senator Ewhrudjakpo, born on September 5, 1965, served as a former federal lawmaker and had held the position of Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State since 2020.
