Super Eagles Soar to AFCON Bronze: Nigeria Secures Ninth Consolation in Thrilling Victory

The Super Eagles of Nigeria navigated a tournament filled with highs and lows at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Casablanca, Morocco, ultimately clinching a record ninth bronze medal. Their journey saw them reach the semi-finals, only to face a heartbreaking 4-2 penalty shootout loss against host nation Morocco, following a goalless draw after 120 minutes of intense play. This defeat on Wednesday dashed Nigeria's hopes of securing a fourth AFCON title.
Despite the semi-final exit, the team's performance throughout the tournament garnered significant praise. Comrade Philip Shaibu, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Sports Commission (NIS), lauded the Eagles' efforts, suggesting that match officials, the crowd, and the hosts had worked against Nigeria in the semi-final. Similarly, the Federal Government, through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, described the team’s display as a source of inspiration, highlighting their character, teamwork, and resilience.
Super Eagles Head Coach, Eric Chelle, reflected on the painful loss, acknowledging shortcomings in intensity, technicality, and movement but commending his players' mentality and fighting spirit. He conceded that Morocco deserved their victory, while emphasizing his team's commitment to every ball. Calls for Chelle's retention for continuity were made by Comrade Philip Shaibu, who expressed belief in the coach's ability to lead Nigeria to the 2027 AFCON, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Shaibu also urged immediate preparations for the next AFCON and the 2030 World Cup.
With the final dream extinguished, attention swiftly turned to the bronze medal match against record seven-time winners, Egypt. This encounter was set to be the 25th clash between the two nations at a senior level and their 10th at the Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria entered the match with a formidable record, having never lost an AFCON third-place match and already holding eight bronze medals, the most by any African country. The first bronze, incidentally, was won against Egypt in 1976 with a 3-2 victory.
Coach Eric Chelle made several changes to the starting lineup for the bronze medal match. Key players Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman were initially benched, with Osimhen nursing a slight knock. Alex Iwobi also started from the substitutes' bench. Calvin Bassey was unavailable due to suspension from accumulated yellow cards, with Igoh Ogbu stepping in as his replacement. Wilfred Ndidi, Nigeria's influential captain who missed the semi-final, was welcomed back to bolster the midfield. Paul Onuachu spearheaded the attack, supported by Moses Simon, who assumed the captain's armband, Samuel Chukwueze, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. The starting XI featured Nwabali; Ajayi, Ogbu, Onyemaechi, Osayi-Samuel; Dele-Bashiru, Onyedika, Chukwueze, Simon, Adams, Onuachu.
Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo, who famously scored the winning goal in Nigeria's 2019 AFCON third-place playoff, urged the team to seek redemption. He stressed the importance of winning the bronze to appease fans, especially after failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and missing out on the AFCON final.
The third-place match itself was a cagey affair. Both teams struggled to find attacking rhythm, leading to a goalless draw after 90 minutes. Nigeria had two goals disallowed by VAR: an Akor Adams header ruled out due to a foul by Paul Onuachu in the build-up, and an Ademola Lookman header disallowed for offside. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as Nigeria's hero during the ensuing penalty shootout, saving two crucial spot-kicks from Egyptian stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. Though Fisayo Dele-Bashiru missed Nigeria's first penalty, Akor Adams, Moses Simon, and Alex Iwobi calmly converted theirs. Ademola Lookman, brought on as a substitute, stepped up to score the decisive kick, securing a 4-2 penalty shootout victory for the Super Eagles.
Stanley Nwabali's stellar performance earned him the Man of the Match award. The victory cemented Nigeria's flawless record in AFCON third-place matches and extended their bronze medal tally to nine. President Bola Tinubu promptly congratulated the Super Eagles, declaring it a
