Crypto King MicroStrategy Resumes Massive Bitcoin Accumulation After 10-Week Hiatus

Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, has reignited its aggressive Bitcoin acquisition strategy, announcing last Monday the purchase of nearly $370 million in the leading cryptocurrency. This significant move marks a resumption of its buying pattern, which had been paused in June as the company shifted focus towards building a cash buffer, repurchasing its stock, and occasionally divesting some holdings.

According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Strategy acquired a total of 4,603 bitcoins between August 24 and August 30, with the total value amounting to $369.7 million. Each coin was purchased at an average price of $80,318 during this period. The company's return to direct Bitcoin acquisitions underscores its long-term commitment to its treasury strategy.

CEO Phong Le elaborated on the company's evolving financial philosophy in June, stating, "Strategy is evolving from one-way capital issuance to active capital management." He further explained that this new approach involves moving between issuing securities when capital is attractive and repurchasing securities when the company's instruments trade at levels that make buybacks accretive. This strategic flexibility is designed to enhance shareholder value, improve corporate performance, and solidify the market standing and quality of Strategy's securities in the eyes of investors.

Currently, Strategy boasts substantial financial reserves, including $5.1 billion in its USD Reserve and a newly announced $1.61 billion in its USD Cash reserve. The company remains the world's largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, with its total holdings now reaching an impressive 845,050 bitcoins, valued at approximately $65.8 billion at current market prices. Strategy initially embarked on its Bitcoin treasury strategy in August 2020, aiming to boost shareholder returns during the pandemic, and has since invested over $63.7 billion in acquiring the cryptocurrency, inspiring many other companies to adopt similar crypto-treasury approaches.

Chairman and founder Michael Saylor has indicated that the company is also concentrating on developing "digital credit" initiatives. These high-yield products, such as its preferred equity, STRC, are designed to be backed by its extensive Bitcoin holdings. On Monday morning in New York, Strategy's stock (NASDAQ: MSTR) saw a slight uptick, although its year-to-date performance shows a nearly 20% dip. Concurrently, Bitcoin was trading at $77,821, having peaked at $81,281 last week and demonstrating a robust 24% increase over the past 30 days.
