South Africa Faces Severe Thunderstorms, Extreme Fire Danger and Intense Heat
South Africa faces a Monday of intense weather warnings, including Level 2 severe thunderstorms for the Eastern Cape, Red Level 10 veld fire conditions across multiple provinces, and heatwave advisories for KwaZulu-Natal. Residents are urged to take precautions against potential damage, fire spread, and health risks from extreme temperatures.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS)has issued multiple weather warnings for Monday, October 12, 2026, covering severe thunderstorms, extremely high veld fire danger, and intense heat across several provinces. A Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms is in effect across much of the Eastern Cape, excluding the extreme north-east, from 15:00 to 23:59.
Areas at risk include Molteno, Queenstown, Grahamstown, Lady Frere, Libode and Tsolo, where storms could cause localised damage to homes and temporary structures, disrupt electricity and communication services, trigger flooding, damage crops and threaten lives.
Residents have been advised to monitor official forecasts, secure loose outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during storms and stay away from flooded areas.
A Red Level 10 warning for extremely high veld fire conditions applies from 08:00 to 18:59 in areas including Prince Albert, Ladismith, Beaufort West and Sutherland, with other high-risk locations across the Northern Cape, North West, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. SAWS warns that a Fire Danger Index above 75 means fires can start and spread rapidly, threatening property, livestock and human life; the public is urged not to light open fires, burn rubbish or discard cigarette butts near dry vegetation.
Meanwhile, a heatwave advisory remains in effect in parts of north-western KwaZulu-Natal until Tuesday, October 13, while uncomfortably hot and humid conditions are expected in parts of the southern Eastern Cape. Residents are advised to drink plenty of water, limit strenuous activity during peak heat, seek shade and check on older people and young children.
Temperatures are forecast to reach 36°C in Pietermaritzburg, with Newcastle and Richards Bay expected to hit 35°C; Mthatha could also reach 35°C, while East London is forecast at 34°C and Durban at 30°C. Johannesburg and Soweto are expected to reach 30°C, Pretoria 31°C, Rustenburg 32°C and Mahikeng, Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp around 30–31°C, while Cape Town is forecast at 19°C and George at 21°C with showers.
Coastal tide forecasts list high and low tides for Cape Town, Port Nolloth, Gqeberha, East London and Durban, while Monday night’s moon is expected to be a waxing crescent, approximately 5% illuminated, ahead of the next full moon on October 26. Residents are encouraged to check the latest regional forecasts and SAWS alerts, as conditions can change.
