Political Firestorm in Zambia: Hichilema Alleges Assassination Plot, Nkombo Rift Deepens
Former MP Gary Nkombo has labeled President Hichilema's recent verbal attacks as abusive and untruthful, stating he will focus on his campaign rather than respond. Nkombo defended his right to stand as an independent candidate and clarified the origin of his campaign symbol, while also recalling his past support for Hichilema.
Former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development and former Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament, Gary Nkombo, has publicly responded to what he describes as abusive and untruthful verbal attacks from President Hakainde Hichilema. Mr. Nkombo expressed puzzlement regarding the President's repeated mentions of him at rallies held in various locations including Chirundu, Chikankata, and Mazabuka.
Despite the nature of President Hichilema's remarks, Mr. Nkombo stated unequivocally that he would not waste time engaging in a direct response. Instead, his primary focus remains on his ongoing political campaign. In an interview with Zambian Watch News, Mr. Nkombo emphasized that it is not his custom to respond to allegations he deems untrue.
Addressing his political stance, Mr. Nkombo asserted his constitutional right to contest a parliamentary seat as an independent candidate, referencing Article 51 of the Constitution of Zambia which permits eligible individuals to do so. He also refuted President Hichilema's claims linking him to NRPUP President Brian Mundubile, specifically addressing the use of a candle symbol on his campaign materials. Mr. Nkombo clarified that the symbol was neither chosen nor created by him, but rather allocated by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).
Further elaborating on his decision not to address other presidential remarks, Mr. Nkombo reiterated that he considers them abusive and baseless. He also reminded the public of his past dedication to supporting President Hichilema, recalling instances where he endured intimidation and physical assault during the Patriotic Front (PF) administration.
In conclusion, Mr. Nkombo urged his supporters to maintain their focus on the campaign and continue their diligent efforts, underscoring that he is no longer affiliated with the UPND party.
