Plateau Bloodbath: Eight Innocents Buried After Horrific Gunmen Attack

No fewer than eight individuals were killed and at least 10 others injured, with some reports suggesting over 15 casualties, when gunmen attacked Gwon-Ajang village in the Foron District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State. The tragic incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. on Sunday, as assailants opened fire on villagers who had gathered for a birthday celebration. Witnesses described a chaotic scene where attackers shot indiscriminately, forcing residents to flee in panic.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the attack on Monday, stating that those who sustained injuries were receiving medical treatment. A resident, Bishop Iliya, echoed the account, lamenting the "painful and unfortunate situation" and the recurring violence in Plateau communities, calling for stronger security measures.

The eight victims of the Gwon-Ajang attack were laid to rest on Monday evening in a somber ceremony attended by grieving family members, community and religious leaders, and sympathisers. During the burial, Hon. Peter Gyendeng, a former member of the House of Representatives for Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency, expressed the community's profound exhaustion with the persistent loss of life. "We are sick and tired of being killed," he stated, emphasizing the peaceful disposition of the affected communities despite the continuous assaults. He urged security agencies and government authorities to take immediate action to halt the attacks and ensure justice for the victims.

Similarly, Hon. Ishaya David Lalu, representing Mangu/Bokkos Federal Constituency, voiced deep sorrow over the killings, describing them as "cruel" and an "unacceptable" assault on humanity. He called for intensified efforts from security agencies to protect vulnerable communities and apprehend those responsible for the violence. Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, further highlighted the alarming security situation, noting that many rural communities remain vulnerable due to inadequate security presence and rely on poorly equipped local vigilante groups.

This latest incident contributes to an escalating pattern of violence across Plateau State in recent weeks. On May 11, two young men, Peter Dung (22) and Amos Danbwarang (19), were ambushed and killed in Kyeng village, Bachi District of Riyom Local Government Area, with attackers reportedly fleeing into nearby bushes. Just two days prior, on May 9, a midnight attack on Ngbra-Zongo village in Bassa Local Government Area resulted in the deaths of at least 12 people, including pregnant women and children. Amnesty International condemned these killings, attributing them to the Nigerian government’s failure to address persistent insecurity and calling for justice for victims.

Another deadly assault occurred on May 5 in the Nding Susut community of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where gunmen killed five people, including four women and a nine-year-old boy, and injured three others. Following this attack, police confirmed the deployment of additional tactical teams and operational assets, with Police spokesperson Alfred Alabo stating that security presence in Barkin Ladi had been reinforced to prevent further incidents and aid investigations.

Despite assurances from Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who pledged to strengthen security measures across vulnerable communities and reiterated bans on night mining and night grazing, the violence has persisted. Governor Mutfwang had promised that perpetrators would be identified and brought to justice during visits to affected areas. However, security concerns remain high in Barkin Ladi, Bassa, Riyom, and Mangu local government areas, where recurring attacks continue to cause deaths, injuries, and displacement, fueling urgent calls for enhanced protection for rural communities across the state.
