Tonight, the Moses van der Byl Stadium in Soweto, Katutura, is set to become a vibrant hub of musical tribute, as Namibian artists gather to stage a significant fundraising show. This event is dedicated to honoring the memory and legacy of their revered colleague and veteran musician, Siegfried 'Ou Jomo' Haoseb, who was affectionately known as 'the godfather of drums'.

Ou Jomo's illustrious career was marked by exceptional talent. He was posthumously recognized alongside the legendary late guitarist Sebulon Gomachab, popularly known as Axue, with the coveted lifetime achiever award at the Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMAs) in 2018. His son, Toni Haoseb, highlighted his father's unique drumming prowess, stating, "Anyone who saw my dad playing the drums would agree he was not your average drummer. He is not considered 'the godfather of drums' for nothing. Ou Jomo was an extraordinary talent, and his work can be heard on township pop and gospel songs."

Beyond his musical genius, Siegfried Haoseb was also an accomplished footballer in the 1960s and 70s, known for tormenting defenses with his exceptional skills. However, the allure of music ultimately prevailed, leading him to retire from football and dedicate himself fully to his passion. His musical journey included a successful tenure with The Ugly Creatures, with whom he released two pop albums and one gospel album, cementing his place in the Namibian music scene.

Ou Jomo's influence extended beyond Namibia's borders. He gained recognition in neighboring South Africa when he played with the now-disbanded Afro-Rock group Harari, one of that country's most popular live bands during the 1970s and 80s. During Harari's pre-independence road show, many were particularly curious to see how Ou Jomo would fill the shoes of the iconic drummer and band leader Sipho 'Hot Stix' Mabuse, who at the time preferred to sing while playing keyboard and saxophone.

The fundraising concert, organized by Toni Haoseb, promises to be a spectacular affair, bringing together a diverse array of local musicians eager to pay their respects to their departed hero. Toni remarked, "The most befitting thing is that some of his fellow band members of the Uglies are still alive and they can honour their old friend in this way." The lineup features a rich blend of seasoned artists and prominent young players, ensuring a truly dynamic musical experience.

Attendees can look forward to performances from bands such as Sigera, Swingers Jazz Band, Ras Cool and the Weekend Band, K-Connections, Baisako Brothers, Face to Face Band, Bollitjie and Friends, the !Ngengelesi Band, the Heart Beaters, and the red-hot 4x4 Too Much Power. Veteran musicians like Sledge Kanime, who once fronted The Ugly Creatures in the 70s, Pieter Auchab, Michael !Owos-Oab, Ras Lando and Ngatu, and Tulonga will add a reggae flavor to the event. The younger generation will be represented by the evergreen Ma /Gaisa duo Raphael and Pele, Dixon, Marvtown, and Mr Green. Esteemed women singers including Erna Chimu, Jaliza, OC Bulan, Kalina, and Imelda will also grace the stage, alongside Damara Punch stars Slow and Kanepi.

The event, described as a "real carnival event," will be hosted by the talented songbird Esme Katjikuru, serving as the MC for the evening. Doors open at 15h00, with an entry fee of N$50.
