Metacritic Censors AI-Generated 'Slop' Review of Resident Evil Requiem from VideoGamer

Review aggregator Metacritic recently took significant action by removing a review of the game Resident Evil Requiem from its website. This decision came after a collective effort from users who determined with clear certainty that the review in question had been generated by artificial intelligence. The problematic "review" was initially published by the British gaming publication VideoGamer and was formally credited to an author identified as "Brian Merrygold."
Further scrutiny of the controversial piece revealed several undeniable indicators of its artificial origin. Both the specific phrasing and stylistic choices within the review text, alongside the accompanying author photograph, exhibited characteristic signs commonly associated with content created by artificial intelligence. Despite these telltale markers, the review had been assigned a high score of 9 out of 10. This score was subsequently indexed by Metacritic, appearing alongside more than one hundred other reviews that were presumably authored by human beings, highlighting a notable contrast in the review landscape.
The incident underscores the growing challenges faced by platforms that aggregate user and professional content, particularly in discerning authentic human-generated material from sophisticated AI creations. The removal by Metacritic, prompted by user vigilance, demonstrates an active effort to maintain the integrity and credibility of its indexed reviews, ensuring that critical assessments of video games accurately reflect human perspective and judgment.
