Kruger National Park Under Siege: Severe Weather Forces Evacuations and Road Closures

South African National Parks (SANParks) has activated extensive safety measures at Kruger National Park following a Level 6 severe weather warning issued for Limpopo Province, effective Sunday, January 11, through Monday, January 12, 2026. Forecasts indicate heavy rainfall and potential flooding, prompting the deployment of comprehensive disaster management protocols aimed at safeguarding guests, staff, and communities surrounding the park.
As of 11:00 on January 11, SANParks released an updated road closure register. The Sand low water bridge is currently overflowing and closed to traffic, while the Sabie low water bridge at Skukuza is being closely monitored for rising levels. Heavy rains have also forced the temporary closure of the Giriyondo border post, and the Makhadzi picnic spot is affected, underscoring the broad operational impact of the storm.
Preventative evacuations are underway at Shingwedzi, Sirheni, and Bateleur Camps to mitigate flood risks and preemptively address access challenges. Guests at Balule and Pafuri Camps may remain, as these areas are outside immediate danger zones. Additionally, visitors and staff from bush camps including Talamati, Mbiyamiti, and Roodewaal are being relocated to Satara and Lower Sabie Rest Camps, which remain safely accessible via Tshokwane, ensuring uninterrupted emergency support and services.
For air travelers, Skukuza Airport maintains safe access through Shalati Railway Station. All concession operators within the park are actively contributing to the Disaster Management Committee, coordinating a unified response. Airlink is providing additional resources from Johannesburg to assist in the safe movement of tourists between Skukuza Airport and accommodation facilities, ensuring a smooth and controlled evacuation.
SANParks emphasized that guest and staff safety is its top priority, with weather conditions under continuous monitoring. Visitors are urged to follow official SANParks channels for real-time updates and cooperate fully with park officials and emergency personnel. Guests wishing to cancel or reschedule bookings can contact SANParks Central Reservations during working hours. Campers are strongly advised to transition to accommodation facilities rather than staying at campsites during this period.
These actions reflect the importance of proactive disaster management and clear communication in protecting visitors and sustaining Africa’s tourism ecosystem. Travel professionals and tourists alike are encouraged to stay alert to evolving conditions and make informed decisions to ensure safety during this severe weather event.
