Jack Dorsey's Block Slashes 4,000 Jobs, Citing AI Gains: A Harbinger of Future Layoffs?

Jack Dorsey's financial technology company, Block, which oversees operations for Square, Cash App, and Tidal, announced significant workforce reductions. The company is cutting over 4,000 employees, nearly half of its global workforce, reducing its staff from over 10,000 to just under 6,000. This drastic measure was met with an enthusiastic response from investors, as Block's stock surged more than 24% in after-hours trading, climbing to nearly $69 after gaining 5% during regular trading hours to $54.53.
Dorsey framed these cuts as a proactive and even empathetic decision, rather than a response to a financial emergency. He communicated that repeated rounds of layoffs are detrimental to morale, focus, and trust, stating, "I’d rather get there honestly and on our own terms than be forced into it reactively." He also predicted that many companies would adopt similar strategies within a year. Block's Chief Financial Officer, Amrita Ahuja, attributed the layoffs to the company's strategic positioning to "move faster with smaller, highly talented teams using AI to automate more work." Dorsey explicitly named AI as a key driver, asserting that "intelligence tools have changed what it means to build and run a company," and that "a significantly smaller team, using the tools we’re building, can do more and do it better."
This move draws parallels to Elon Musk's decision in November 2022 to slash approximately 50% of Twitter’s staff after taking the company private. Dorsey, a long-time admirer of Musk, was in a unique position to observe this, having rolled his 2.4% stake in Twitter into Musk's takeover. The relationship between Dorsey and Musk has been complex, characterized by initial support for the Twitter acquisition, followed by criticism, and then later calling X "freedom technology." Both leaders are also vocal proponents of Bitcoin, with Block and Tesla holding the cryptocurrency on their balance sheets.
Block reported robust financial performance for its fourth quarter, with gross profit jumping 24% from the previous year. For U.S. employees affected by the layoffs, Dorsey outlined a comprehensive severance package: 20 weeks of salary plus one additional week per year of tenure, equity vested through the end of May, six months of healthcare, retention of corporate devices, and a $5,000 allowance for transition support. Employees outside the U.S. are slated to receive "similar support" in accordance with their respective countries' policies.
The trend of significant layoffs citing AI gains is not unique to Block. Other major companies, including Salesforce and Amazon, have also announced substantial staffing cuts, attributing them to increased efficiencies from AI. However, a recent Forrester Research report has cast doubt on the extent of these AI-driven gains, suggesting that many layoffs might be primarily financially motivated. Block's layoffs are part of a broader trend of job cuts announced by high-profile companies in recent months, including UPS, Dow, and the Washington Post, though overall layoffs by American companies remain at relatively healthy levels.
