APC Congress Rocks States: Lagos Chairman Retains Seat, New Leaders Emerge

The All Progressives Congress (APC) recently concluded its state congresses across several Nigerian states, including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, and Ondo. These congresses saw the re-election or emergence of state chairmen and executive committee members, primarily through consensus arrangements or affirmation, reflecting the party's focus on unity and democratic processes.
In Lagos State, Cornelius Ojelabi was re-elected chairman of the APC at the state congress held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena. Approximately 2,000 delegates returned Ojelabi and other members of the state executive committee via a consensus arrangement. Key re-elected or newly emerged executives include Moshood Mayegun (Deputy Chairman), Dr Adeola Jokomba (Secretary), Oluseye Oladejo (Publicity Secretary), Mrs Folashade Bakare (Legal Adviser), Abiodun Ayigbe (Treasurer), Banjo Adedoyin-Wasiu (Financial Secretary), Ayodele Adewale (Organising Secretary), Seriki Muritala (Youth Leader), Azizat Mariam (Assistant Secretary), Babajide Sunday (Vice Chairman), and Shola Eletu (Woman Leader). Stella Okotete, Chairman of the state congress committee, announced the consensus list, emphasizing that the congress must be democratic, transparent, and in strict compliance with the party constitution. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu lauded the peaceful nature of the congress, asserting the party's strong structure and unity of purpose in Lagos, while urging the new executives to ensure inclusivity, fairness, and equity. Ojelabi, speaking on behalf of the executives, thanked party leaders and members, highlighting the forthcoming election as an opportunity to demonstrate the party's collective strength. The congress was monitored by officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and attended by prominent figures such as Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, and various senators.
Meanwhile, in Ogun State, Yemi Sanusi secured his re-election as the Chairman of the APC for a third term during the state congress at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta. Other executive members were also elected by affirmation, with Congress Chairman Wale Ohu confirming the participation of 1,180 elected delegates. Governor Dapo Abiodun challenged the newly elected party leaders to intensify grassroots engagement in every ward and local government, clearly communicating achievements and responding to public aspirations ahead of the 2027 elections. He stressed that victory would come through preparation, not assumption.
Oyo State saw the emergence of Moses Alake Adeyemo, a former Deputy Governor during the tenure of late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, as the APC chairman. Adeyemo, an indigene of Igboho in the Oke-Ogun area, was unanimously adopted as a consensus candidate at the party’s State Congress held at Liberty Stadium, Oke-Ado, Ibadan. He had served as Ajimobi’s deputy from 2011 to 2019.
In Ondo State, Kolawole Babatunde, a former member of the House of Representatives and Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Legislative Matters and Party Affairs, was elected the new state chairman. Babatunde, alongside other executive members, emerged via 'voice votes' after party stakeholders unanimously agreed to adopt a consensus at the State Congress held at the International Centre and Event Centre, The DOME, in Akure. Alex Kalejaye, the former Publicity Secretary, also emerged as the party’s State Secretary. Governor Aiyedatiwa and other party leaders were in attendance. Ogbeni Kayode Fakuyi, an APC chieftain, praised Babatunde's emergence, commending Governor Aiyedatiwa's unifying leadership and expressing optimism that Babatunde's experience would lead Ondo APC to significant wins in future elections. Fakuyi further urged the new executives to mobilize party members in support of the Governor Aiyedatiwa-led administration and its initiatives, and to devise systematic approaches for members to benefit from government at all levels.
