Zambia Rocked: Opposition Leaders Mundubile, Makebi Face Treason Trial and Prison Transfer!

The case has drawn significant public attention as the accused prepare to appear before the courts to answer these charges. Mundubile, represented by his lawyer Milner Katolo, vehemently maintains his innocence and is prepared to defend himself against the allegations through the judicial process. His legal team is confident that the trial will provide a crucial opportunity to challenge the State’s case and demonstrate the unfounded nature of the accusations. Under Zambian law, all accused persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
The wider investigation at the heart of these treason charges is an ongoing national security matter, involving allegations of an illegal militia, various weapons, and suspected military activities linked to foreign entities. Authorities have indicated that this investigation commenced prior to the general election on August 13. The intensity of the investigation significantly heightened following a security operation conducted on August 14 at Mundubile’s Kabulonga residence, an incident that tragically resulted in the death of former Cabinet minister Mutotwe Kafwaya, who was shot during the operation. Following this, eleven individuals were initially apprehended, with police reporting the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and tactical equipment from the premises. Mundubile has explicitly denied any allegations regarding the existence of a militia.
Mundubile and Zulu were taken into police custody last week after investigators recorded warn-and-caution statements from them concerning the alleged treason. Their detention followed several days spent at United Nations premises in Lusaka, after which Zambia’s eight Church Mother Bodies facilitated their transition to their legal representatives to commence legal proceedings. Milner Katolo confirmed that 18 of the accused were transferred on August 30 from various detention facilities where they had been held since their arrests. The accused are currently being held at Zambia’s highest-security correctional facility as they await their first court appearance and the formal presentation of the State’s case. The defence team has been informed that lawyers will only be permitted to meet with their clients after September 2.
