The proliferation of generative AI has led to an unprecedented increase in digital content, making it increasingly difficult for individuals and organizations to track and manage their accumulated videos, recordings, and documents. In response to this growing challenge, a new wave of AI-powered solutions is emerging, with major tech giants like Adobe, Apple, and Google, alongside a multitude of startups, leveraging artificial intelligence to make these vast archives searchable. A key question in this evolving landscape is whether these solutions will coalesce into a new category of standalone software or become integrated as standard features within existing products. Clipto, a San Francisco-headquartered startup with teams also in Singapore and Hong Kong, is firmly betting on the former, positioning itself as a distinct product in this burgeoning market.

Clipto recently announced a significant milestone, having raised $15 million in an all-equity funding round, valuing the company at $250 million post-money. This round saw investments from prominent entities including HSG (formerly Sequoia China), GL Ventures, EnvisionX Capital, Palm Drive Capital, and individual investors such as Hans Tung, Lu Zhang, and 522 Ventures. At its core, Clipto provides a sophisticated indexing system that scans and organizes videos, audio, images, meetings, and various other files residing on a user’s computer. This eliminates the need for tedious manual folder navigation, allowing users to find specific content by simply describing what they are looking for or by enlisting the help of AI tools like ChatGPT or Claude to conduct the search.

The vision behind Clipto is rooted in nearly two decades of work by its founder, Henry Kang. Kang’s journey began in 2006 as a PhD student at Carnegie Mellon University, where he contributed to research on robots capable of recording their environments, identifying objects, and retaining memory of their locations. This foundational concept later informed his first startup, which utilized AI to catalog clothing in a user's closet and suggest outfits. His second venture, Zenvideo, focused on simplifying video creation and was successfully acquired by Tencent in 2020. Kang emphasizes his key insight: “The real insight is that in this AI era, we don’t have a content shortage. The opposite is true. We have too much content. We have too much video footage sitting on our computers that isn’t being used.” This observation directly inspired the founding of Clipto in 2023, where Kang reunited with several members of his previous startup’s founding team to build a company dedicated to helping users discover and repurpose existing files rather than generating new ones.

Initially, Clipto catered primarily to video creators struggling to manage footage dispersed across multiple computers and external drives. However, its utility has broadened significantly, with creators now accounting for only about a quarter to a third of its user base. The platform has attracted a diverse array of professionals, including lawyers, doctors, researchers, marketers, human resources professionals, professors, and students. The company boasts an impressive user acquisition, stating that over 30 million people have engaged with its products since launch, and it maintains hundreds of thousands of paying subscribers. While Kang refrained from disclosing a more precise subscriber count or average revenue per customer, he noted that a substantial portion of customers remain subscribed for over two years. Clipto achieved $15 million in annual recurring revenue by the beginning of 2026 and operates profitably on a net-income basis with a lean team of just over 20 employees distributed across the San Francisco Bay Area, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

In a recent development, Clipto integrated support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) approximately two weeks ago. MCP is a standard designed to enable AI applications to securely connect with external information sources. Kang stresses that access to indexed files through Clipto requires explicit user request and authorization. Furthermore, when an AI application retrieves data from Clipto's indexed content, it can only access information strictly within the scope specified by the user. A crucial privacy and performance feature is that all this processing is conducted locally on the user’s device, eliminating the need for cloud services.

Clipto operates within a competitive market where established tech giants already wield significant control over the data and software people use daily. Adobe, for instance, offers AI-powered search capabilities within its Premiere software, while Apple Photos and Google Photos enable users to search for photos and videos using natural language descriptions. Kang highlights Clipto’s distinct advantage: its ability to search comprehensively across videos, audio, images, and documents, in contrast to products from Adobe, Apple, and Google, which typically focus on files stored within their proprietary services. Additionally, Clipto empowers users to make selected information available to popular AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude. The company’s strategic bet is that by consolidating these diverse functions into a single, user-centric product, it can effectively compete with larger platforms. The freshly secured funding will be strategically deployed to advance the AI models and computing infrastructure necessary to operate Clipto efficiently on consumer hardware, as well as to facilitate integrations with a broader ecosystem of AI agents.
