Nvidia's $3.5 Billion MediaTek Power Play Targets Big Tech's AI Chip Reign!
Nvidia is investing $3.5 billion in MediaTek to enable the Taiwanese chipmaker to design custom AI chips that can integrate into Nvidia-based data centers. This strategic partnership helps Nvidia maintain its lead in AI infrastructure while expanding its ecosystem. The collaboration extends beyond data centers to include AI PCs and advanced AI-powered vehicles.
Nvidia has made a significant investment of $3.5 billion into Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek, a move designed to deepen their strategic partnership in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape. This substantial investment will enable MediaTek to integrate Nvidia's advanced technology, empowering it to design bespoke chips specifically for AI companies and large-scale cloud providers, often referred to as hyperscalers. These custom-designed chips will be capable of seamless integration directly into Nvidia-based data centers, enhancing the overall AI infrastructure.
This collaboration comes at a crucial time when a growing number of prominent AI firms and major cloud service providers, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic, are increasingly investing in developing their own proprietary chips. This trend is driven by a desire to reduce their dependence on Nvidia's powerful Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). By forging deals such as the one with MediaTek, Nvidia strategically allows for the growth of custom silicon development while simultaneously solidifying its position as the dominant provider of data center infrastructure. Dion Harris, Nvidia’s senior director of HPC and AI hyperscaler infrastructure solutions, articulated Nvidia's broader vision, stating, “Nvidia is an AI infrastructure company,” and emphasized that the company “expanded beyond pure computing chips years ago.”
The partnership also highlights Nvidia’s consistent strategy over recent years of investing in companies that, in turn, contribute back to its expansive ecosystem. A key benefit for MediaTek under this agreement is gaining access to Nvidia’s sophisticated NVLink Fusion ecosystem. This includes NVLink technology itself, which is critical for enabling ultra-fast communication between various chips, even those not manufactured by Nvidia. This advanced interconnectivity is vital for the performance of large-scale AI workloads. Last week, Nvidia announced a similar, though not directly investment-backed, partnership with Amazon Web Services, where AWS committed to deploying an additional 2 million Nvidia GPUs and integrating NVLink Fusion into its infrastructure.
With Nvidia’s support, MediaTek will be uniquely positioned to continue developing custom chips tailored precisely to the specific workloads of cloud companies and AI laboratories. This capability will leverage Nvidia's “proven scale-up and scale-out technology stack and ecosystem” alongside its “rack-scale architecture.” Harris explained the broad impact, noting that “Basically, every cloud, every model builder is deploying our platform in some shape, form, or fashion.” He further elaborated that MediaTek’s ability to offer this extension to its customers will allow them to standardize on the rack-scale infrastructure across their AI factories and seamlessly deploy their custom chips right alongside existing systems using the same standard platform. Harris concluded by stating, “This is really about opening up this ecosystem to the entire MediaTek customer base.”
While MediaTek has not publicly disclosed specifics about its customer base for custom AI chips, it is evident that Nvidia aims to significantly bolster this segment of MediaTek’s business, ensuring that Nvidia remains an integral part of this expansion. MediaTek has been steadily advancing its custom data center Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) operations, projecting that this business segment will generate $2 billion in revenue by 2026, with aspirations to capture an even larger market share in the coming years.
Beyond data center AI, the companies are extending their collaboration into other key areas. Given MediaTek’s established expertise in developing custom chips for smartphones, smart homes, automobiles, and wireless communications, the partnership will also see continued joint efforts on DGX Spark, Nvidia’s compact, developer-focused desktop AI computer. Furthermore, the collaboration encompasses RTX Spark, Nvidia’s initiative to integrate its AI technology into consumer AI PCs. A press release also outlined their ongoing commitment to “developing platforms for AI-powered, software-defined vehicles in the era of physical AI.” This includes MediaTek’s automotive platforms utilizing Nvidia’s RTX graphics for advanced intelligent vehicle cockpits and working in conjunction with Nvidia Drive AGX, the company’s dedicated in-car computing platform for autonomous driving applications.
Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, encapsulated the far-reaching vision of this partnership, stating, “AI is transforming every computing platform — from the world’s largest AI factories to the PC and the car.” He added, “Together, we’re building platforms that bring NVIDIA accelerated computing to new markets and give customers the freedom to create differentiated AI systems at enormous scale.”
