US, Russia Preparing To Hold Hockey Matches
Amid ongoing efforts to normalize diplomatic relations, the possibility of a series of USA vs. Russia hockey games is gaining traction. The idea, initially discussed during a phone conversation between Presidents Trump and Putin last month, has now been publicly acknowledged by Russia’s Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev.
The March 18 phone call, which also addressed the 'energy sites ceasefire,' included a discussion about hosting a major hockey event. The NHL stated at the time that it had just become aware of the conversation between President Trump and President Putin regarding the potential for such an event. Minister Degtyarev has recently confirmed that serious, private negotiations are underway to make these games a reality. He suggested that the matches could take place in St. Petersburg and Washington in the near future.
"The matches are indeed possible. Private negotiations are underway. You’ll know about it when they’re over," Degtyarev told a Russian sports broadcast channel. He noted that scheduling remains the most significant hurdle, as the teams would draw players from both the NHL and Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Despite the challenges, Degtyarev expressed optimism, stating, "Chances are high" that the event will come to fruition.
The proposed hockey games could provide a significant boost for Russian athletes, who have faced restrictions on the world stage. Since 2022, the International Ice Hockey Federation has banned Russia from its tournaments due to the Ukraine war. Additionally, Russia’s Olympic Committee (ROC) has been suspended from world competition, and Degtyarev serves as the president of the ROC.
The concept of 'sports diplomacy' has historically played a role in navigating relations between the United States and Russia, particularly during the Cold War. The revival of this approach aims to foster peace and normalize relations between the two nations. However, Ukraine has expressed strong opposition to the plan, seeking to maintain Russia’s isolation.
A USA vs. Russia hockey game, with extensive international media coverage and participation from star athletes, would undoubtedly challenge this isolation. Such an event would represent a notable diplomatic achievement for Moscow, but the White House views it as a worthwhile endeavor if it contributes to peace and eventual normalization of relations.
