Travel Alert: Severe Storms Threaten South Africa

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued comprehensive severe storm warnings for multiple provinces, urging residents and motorists alike to exercise extreme caution in light of unfolding, unpredictable weather patterns. The eastern parts of the country, notably Gauteng, are presently experiencing intermittent rainfall, which is significantly impairing visibility on roads.
The extensive warning issued by SAWS covers a broad spectrum of provinces, including Gauteng, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal. Residents within these regions are strongly advised to maintain heightened vigilance regarding rapidly changing weather conditions and to undertake necessary preparations for potential disruptions. SAWS emphasizes staying updated with local news for real-time weather information and advisories.
A critical yellow Level 4 warning has been specifically issued for severe thunderstorms, expected to bring heavy downpours, primarily affecting central and northern KwaZulu-Natal. Those residing in these particular regions face a high risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas and on vulnerable roadways. Furthermore, these severe storms are anticipated to be accompanied by dangerous lightning and damaging winds, which could lead to localized structural damage to infrastructure, homes (especially informal settlements), vehicles, and agricultural livelihoods.
In addition to the Level 4 warning, another alert highlights disruptive rainfall anticipated in the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. This condition is expected to create treacherous driving conditions, characterized by slippery roads and reduced visibility, thereby increasing the likelihood of minor motor vehicle accidents. Motorists are explicitly urged to drive with increased caution, maintain a safe following distance, and strictly adhere to local traffic advisories.
Concurrently, two separate yellow Level 2 warnings have been issued for Gauteng and Mpumalanga. SAWS forecasts severe thunderstorms for the extreme eastern regions of these provinces, which are expected to deliver heavy rain and localized flooding, potentially resulting in damage to both infrastructure and private property.
Beyond the storm warnings, SAWS also forecasts a significant drop in temperatures today across the interior of the eastern half of the Eastern Cape. This will bring very cold conditions, for which residents should prepare diligently, particularly during the morning and evening hours. In Limpopo, the agency reports partly cloudy conditions dominating the southwestern Bushveld, with other areas experiencing generally cloudy and cool weather, accompanied by scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers.
For the Free State, the extreme west is expected to be clear. However, the remainder of the province will experience partly cloudy to cool or cold conditions, with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms. These precipitation events are predicted to be widespread in the extreme eastern parts of the Free State. Residents living in flood-prone areas are advised to take proactive measures to secure their property and to be prepared for potential evacuations should they become necessary.
