Tottenham Hotspur has officially appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager, taking over from Igor Tudor. De Zerbi, who had been unattached since his departure from French club Marseille in February, steps into a challenging situation with the club deeply embroiled in a Premier League relegation battle, hovering just one point above the bottom three. Sources close to ESPN have indicated that the Italian's contract includes a substantial bonus tied to the team's ability to remain in the Premier League, although it is currently unclear if any provisions exist in the event of potential relegation.

In a statement released by the club, De Zerbi expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, stating, "I am delighted to be joining this fantastic football club, which is one of the biggest and most prestigious in the world." He further elaborated on his discussions with the club's leadership, highlighting their clear "ambition for the future -- to build a team capable of reaching great achievements, and to do that playing a style of football that excites and inspires our supporters." Greenwood had faced severe charges, including one count of attempted rape, one count of controlling and coercive behavior, and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, in October 2022. While the Crown Prosecution Service dropped these charges in February 2023 due to key witnesses withdrawing and the emergence of "new material," the THST deemed De Zerbi's supportive remarks as "unnecessary, ill-judged, and deeply offensive to a significant number of supporters and, without doubt, will have left victims of male violence alarmed."

The THST acknowledged the limited pool of managers with recent Premier League experience and the urgent need for decisive action as the club confronts the threat of relegation. They confirmed that these concerns were communicated directly to the club prior to the public announcement. The trust reminded the club of its prior commitments to "challenging instances of violence against women and girls and acting with integrity and upholding its values when faced with any incidents." They cautioned that De Zerbi's statements, if "left unchecked, will create a divide among supporters at a time when we all need to be pulling together to back the team." The THST found it concerning that the club would place them in such a position when fan unity is crucial, potentially straining the "All Together, Always" initiative. They concluded by urging the club to "reassert its commitment to the values that fans hold dear -- chief among them equality, respect, and integrity," warning that any perceived sympathy towards alleged perpetrators of physical or sexual violence against women fundamentally undermines trust in the custodianship of the club.

Roberto De Zerbi's first official match in charge will be an away Premier League fixture against Sunderland on April 12, marking a high-stakes debut under considerable scrutiny.
