Major Stablecoin Milestone: Tether Passes KPMG Audit of Reserves!

Stablecoin giant Tether has successfully completed its first independent audit of reserves, a landmark achievement conducted by KPMG U.S. This accomplishment follows years of effort and criticism regarding the company's transparency and its struggle to secure an audit from a Big Four accounting firm. Tether, the issuer of USDT, the largest stablecoin globally, proudly declared this to be the “largest inaugural financial audit in history.”

For a significant period, Tether faced scrutiny for being secretive about its reserves and for not undergoing an independent audit to verify the assets backing its flagship token. Despite these challenges, Tether consistently expressed its commitment to working with a Big Four firm to ensure full accountability and transparency.

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, emphasized the significance of this audit, stating, “For years, some detractors said an audit of Tether could not be completed. They said the Company refused to subject itself to the most rigorous scrutiny. We have once again proven them wrong. Completing our financial statement audit sets a new standard for the industry and reflects the leadership we’ve brought to this market from the start.”

The audit process was rigorous and comprehensive. Tether highlighted that KPMG “physically counted and inspected every individual gold bar held by Tether, verifying the existence and identifying information of each bar rather than relying solely on reports from custodians or counterparties.” Furthermore, all of Tether's assets and financial statements were subjected to “independent substantive testing and verification,” ensuring a thorough and accurate assessment.

Tether’s reserves are known to be substantial and diversified. In recent years, the company has significantly increased its gold acquisitions, holds more U.S. treasuries than several countries, and possesses nearly $60 billion in Bitcoin, according to data from Arkham Intelligence. This robust reserve portfolio underscores the company's financial strength.

Ardoino further articulated Tether’s evolution, stating, “Tether has evolved from a disruptive stablecoin issuer into one of the most financially significant and operationally sophisticated private companies in the world. This audit demonstrates that our financial infrastructure and governance have evolved alongside that responsibility.” With a market capitalization exceeding $183 billion, Tether's USDT is currently the third-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, solidifying its pivotal role in the digital asset ecosystem.
