Revolutionary EV: 2028 Volkswagen ID.Tiguan Emerges as the Highly Anticipated ID.4 Successor

Volkswagen is set to replace its ID4 electric SUV with a new model named the 2028 Volkswagen ID.Tiguan, a move aimed at addressing the range and charging limitations that have challenged the ID4 in a rapidly evolving market. The ID4, initially lauded as one of the first affordable all-electric vehicles in the U.S., offered a user-friendly entry into the EV world, bypassing the steep learning curve associated with competitors like the Tesla Model Y. However, its specifications quickly became outdated as rivals such as the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 introduced superior range, faster charging capabilities, and more advanced technology, diminishing the ID4's competitive edge despite its comfort and practicality.

The forthcoming second-generation electric SUV, shedding the ID4 moniker for the more globally recognized Tiguan badge, will be officially unveiled by Volkswagen in early October. Its European launch is slated for early 2027, with Volkswagen of America confirming its arrival in the U.S. later that same year as the 2028 ID.Tiguan model. This strategic rebranding and redesign signal Volkswagen's intent to revitalize its mainstream electric SUV offering.

Accompanying the name change, Volkswagen has released camouflaged images that offer a glimpse into the ID.Tiguan's design. The new electric SUV appears to boast a lower, more streamlined stance compared to the outgoing ID4, yet it unmistakably retains its SUV proportions. While incorporating design cues from both the previous ID4 and the gas-powered Tiguan, the ID.Tiguan carves out its own distinct visual identity, reportedly drawing some inspiration from the smaller, Europe-exclusive ID.Cross. The front fascia of the 2028 VW ID.Tiguan features a contemporary look with a slim LED light bar that seamlessly connects the headlights, centered by a prominent Volkswagen badge.

Despite the camouflage effectively concealing finer details, visual analysis reveals air intakes in the lower fascia and distinct openings positioned beneath the headlights. Volkswagen is expected to offer multiple trims at launch, as suggested by the images showcasing two slightly varied front-end designs: one with more body-colored elements and another adopting more rugged black cladding for an assertive aesthetic. The ID.Tiguan's profile maintains a clean and simplistic elegance, characterized by a continuous character line extending from front to rear, running beneath the beltline to impart a sense of length. The extended C-pillar, combined with the current camouflage, lends the rear an appearance somewhat reminiscent of a station wagon, though it is anticipated to present a more streamlined silhouette once fully revealed than its predecessor.
