Mount Elgon Murder Mystery Deepens: Wasama Killing Exposes Dark Underbelly!

The killing of Nathan Wasama Masai, a prominent politician in Mt Elgon constituency, has ignited a significant political storm, with rival politicians openly questioning the circumstances surrounding his death. Accusations have been directed towards the incumbent MP Fred Kapondi, pointing to what is described as a long-running rivalry between the two. While these remain allegations and detectives have not publicly established a political motive or evidence linking Kapondi directly to the killing, the MP's name has repeatedly surfaced in the aftermath due to their shared history.

The relationship between Wasama and Kapondi began with political cooperation but evolved into a fierce rivalry as Wasama positioned himself to challenge Kapondi for the Mt Elgon parliamentary seat in the 2027 general election. Wasama, a former Chesikaki councillor and businessman, had built a strong grassroots political network and was initially associated with Kapondi's political machinery. However, this alliance eventually collapsed, with Wasama notably supporting competitor Allan Chemayek in the 2022 election, although Kapondi retained his seat. Wasama's recent declaration of intent to directly compete against Kapondi solidified his status as a direct electoral rival.

Other political aspirants in Mt Elgon have expressed grave concerns about the political climate. Michael Maruti, a ward representative aspirant, claimed he has been personally threatened with a gun by a leader and highlighted past public confrontations between Wasama and Kapondi, including clips showing the MP allegedly telling Wasama, 'ntakunyorosha' (I will straighten you). Patrick Chemosit, another parliamentary aspirant, questioned the narrative surrounding a 2024 security incident involving Wasama, where it was suggested Wasama tried to kill himself with a gun. Chemosit contrasted this with the condemnation of Wasama's killing, urging Kapondi to clarify his stance.

Wasama was fatally shot last week at his shop in Tuikut Trading Centre, Sasur Location, Cheptais Sub-County. According to police reports, four men arrived on two motorcycles, with one gunman entering the shop and shooting him. Three suspects have since been arrested. During subsequent crackdowns, detectives recovered various items, including a military-style smoke jacket, a stun grenade, axes, pangas, knives, arrows, motorcycles, and mobile phones. A crucial detail noted by investigators is that nothing was reportedly stolen from Wasama during the attack, intensifying questions about the motive behind the killing.

The investigation has seen significant developments, with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters, supported by their western regional counterparts, raiding the home of Mt Elgon MP Fred Kapondi. During the Tuesday evening operation, authorities reportedly recovered crude weapons and a pair of police uniforms. This raid comes amidst strong public sentiment, as evidenced by residents reportedly shouting, “Go for the financier of this killing. We know him, and he should be held accountable,” during a visit by Bungoma County Police Commander Anderson Njagi.

The reaction to Wasama's death is further amplified by Mt Elgon's tumultuous history. The constituency endured severe violence in the mid-2000s, stemming from disputes over the Chepyuk land settlement scheme, which became highly politicized. The emergence of the Sabaot Land Defence Force escalated these grievances into armed conflict, leading to numerous deaths and displacements. This history underscores why political violence remains a deeply sensitive subject in the constituency, making an unresolved murder potentially more dangerous than the crime itself, as it can be weaponized politically.

While MP Fred Kapondi has condemned Wasama's killing and called for thorough investigations, the onus is now on detectives to definitively establish who planned, financed, and carried out the attack, and the underlying motive. This includes investigating Maruti's claims of threats against aspirants. The stakes are high for Mt Elgon as it approaches the 2027 election, demanding a clear resolution to ensure political competition can proceed without fear, moving beyond a past where elections were often decided by threats, guns, or bloodshed.
