Oscar-nominated actor and activist Mark Ruffalo has publicly voiced strong opposition to the impending $111 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance. Ruffalo, currently starring in the hit movie “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” used his Instagram Story to elaborate on his concerns regarding the merger, which is currently facing legal challenges from a dozen state attorney generals, including those in California.
A significant point of contention for Ruffalo revolves around the potential impact of the merger, which is projected to result in approximately 4,500 job losses. Furthermore, the actor expressed alarm over the prospect of Paramount Skydance owner David Ellison, described as a Trump enthusiast and son of Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, gaining control over not only a major Hollywood studio but also CNN. Ruffalo highlighted past concerns about a 'MAGA makeover' Ellison allegedly gave to CBS News, suggesting a similar ideological shift could occur at CNN.
Ruffalo's Instagram Story also featured a video clip of Oracle’s executive vice chair Safra Catz, who is Israeli, discussing the company's efforts to assist Israel following the October 7, 2023, attacks. In the clip, Catz stated that Oracle utilized “really profoundly scary technology” to “advance the agenda for the Israeli military,” though she refrained from providing specific details. This revelation deeply concerned Ruffalo, who has been a vocal critic of Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza.
In a subsequent post on his Instagram Story, Ruffalo shared a passionate message directly linking Oracle to the proposed merger and its wider implications. He asserted that Oracle, the company Larry Ellison is leveraging to fund his son David’s acquisition of Warner Bros., possesses these “really profoundly scary technologies.” Ruffalo warned that these technologies could potentially be integrated into one of the world's largest media conglomerates and, chillingly, “one day used on you.” He went on to criticize Oracle’s complicity in “what we now have come to see as a genocide” against Palestinians, describing it as being built on an “apartheid system of oppression powered by Oracle.”
Ruffalo also questioned the political motives behind the deal, asking, “Why has Trump pushed this illegal merger through?” He characterized Larry Ellison as a “classic Oligarch” who, along with others, is “crushing workers and consolidating the wealth of the world for their own power and concentrated dominance.” The actor urged for the merger to be stopped, emphasizing that 12 state Attorneys General are actively suing to block it. He warned of its catastrophic consequences for the film industry, predicting the loss of 4,500 direct filmmaking jobs and an additional 10,000 ancillary jobs.
Finally, Ruffalo underscored that such mergers are almost universally detrimental to workers, consumers, and the industries they come to dominate. He framed it as a
