She expressed profound sadness and an unimaginable heaviness in her heart, announcing the passing of her beloved husband.
Wright’s family released a statement via TMZ, indicating that he died in Los Angeles on Wednesday, August 19. The cause of death was heart failure, compounded by complications from a degenerative neurological disease known as Marchiafava-Bignami.
Born on April 30, 1956, in New York City, Michael Wright built an extensive career spanning over 50 movies and TV shows. His filmography includes notable titles like “Streamers,” “Sugar Hill,” and “The Wanderers.” On television, he was recognized for his role in the 1980s sci-fi series “V” and the acclaimed HBO drama “Oz.” One of his most iconic roles was in Robert Townsend’s 1991 musical film “The Five Heartbeats,” where he portrayed Eddie King Jr., the charismatic lead vocalist of a fictional Motown group. His character’s struggle with alcohol and drug addiction ultimately led to his departure from the Heartbeats.
Susan Wright’s statement further highlighted Michael’s multifaceted life: “Michael was a husband, a father (Manon Wright, Byron Barr, Brittney Briggs, Brianna Barr, Sir Barr), a grandfather (Yoko), loved one, a friend, and an extraordinary artist whose work touched generations.” She emphasized that while many knew him through his notable roles, he was much more to those who loved him personally. “His talent, presence, and contributions to film and television will live on, but to those of us who loved him personally, he was so much more than the roles the world knew him for.”
