Olivia Rodrigo’s Sizzling SNL Debut: Comedy, Parodies, and a Surprise Cameo

Pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo took on double duty as both host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live's May 2nd episode, marking a significant milestone in her career. The 23-year-old artist delivered a memorable performance and an engaging monologue, showcasing her versatility and humor.

During her opening monologue, Rodrigo playfully reflected on various career highlights and shared personal anecdotes. She expressed that hosting SNL had always been a dream, joking about her age by stating, "I grew up watching the show, and they say your favorite SNL cast is the one you watched as a teenager." She then listed current cast members like Mikey Day, Sarah Sherman, Kenan Thompson, and Chloe Fineman, humorously noting their return to cheer her on. Rodrigo also plugged her upcoming third studio album, "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love," set for release on June 12. With a chuckle, she commented on its unusually lengthy title, saying, "I’ve learned more words, guys. Yay!"

Further delving into her past, Rodrigo reminisced about her early acting days on the Disney Channel series *Bizaardvark*, where she starred alongside Jake Paul. She recounted a humorous exchange with Paul about their respective future aspirations: "I’d say, ‘I really wanna create music that explores the complexities of girls my age,’ and he’d say, ‘Well, one day I really wanna beat up old guys on Netflix.’" This joke directly referenced Paul’s 2024 boxing match against Mike Tyson, which streamed on Netflix, with Rodrigo concluding, "And we both did it, hooray!" The monologue concluded with a clever parody of her 2021 breakout hit, "Drivers License," reimagining the song around the more mundane, yet significant, adult milestone of obtaining a real ID. She sang, "I got my real ID last week, showed up at the DMV. I sat there waiting 14 hours, with 9 forms to prove it’s me," while seated at a piano.

The evening featured two distinct musical performances. The energetic track "Drop Dead," the lead single from "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love," released on April 17, was introduced by Blondie’s legendary frontwoman, Debbie Harry. "Drop Dead" has already achieved immense success, becoming Rodrigo’s fourth No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Later in the show, the 26-year-old *Heated Rivalry* star, Connor Storrie, made an unexpected appearance in an all-denim ensemble, greeted by loud cheers, to introduce Rodrigo’s new song, "Begged." This mournful ballad, also from her upcoming album, was performed by Rodrigo while seated on a swing.

This episode marked Olivia Rodrigo’s third overall appearance on Saturday Night Live but her inaugural experience as a host. She had previously graced the SNL stage as a musical guest in May 2021, performing songs from her debut album *Sour*, and again in December 2023 to promote *Guts*. Storrie, who had previously hosted the late-night comedy show in late February, did not appear in any other sketches during the May 2nd broadcast.
