Olivia Rodrigo Electrifies SNL Stage with Debut of New Single 'Begged'

Pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo made a highly anticipated return to Saturday Night Live, where she not only pulled double duty as host but also debuted a new, unreleased song titled 'begged' from her upcoming third album. Introduced by "Heated Rivalry" star Connor Storrie, Rodrigo's performance of 'begged' was a visual spectacle, featuring her seated on a swing, a direct nod to the cover art for her forthcoming album, "you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love." The album is scheduled for release on June 12.

The song itself is a subdued, melancholic ballad that delves deep into themes of longing and uncertainty. Rodrigo's raw emotion shone through lyrics such as, "All that I want is to know undoubtedly that you just have eyes for me," and "All that I want is to sit here silently and watch movies on TV." The intimate tone continued with lines like, "What a shame you’re not here / here to witness my devotion and my endless well of needs," and the poignant admission, "I feel trapped inside my life."

This new project marks another collaboration with longtime producer Dan Nigro, who previously worked with Rodrigo on her critically acclaimed albums, “Sour” and “Guts.” Rodrigo has characterized the new album as a collection of “sad love songs,” emphasizing a more reflective and emotionally mature approach to her songwriting. Earlier in the evening, as host, she opened the show with a monologue revisiting her Disney Channel roots on “Bizaardvark” and performed a musical parody of her hit “drivers license,” reimagined as a DMV story about acquiring a Real ID.

Rodrigo's SNL appearance caps a busy period, which recently saw her join Addison Rae onstage at Coachella and perform a one-night-only show at The Echo in Los Angeles. Since her breakout in 2021 with “Sour” and the subsequent success of 2023’s “Guts,” Olivia Rodrigo has firmly established herself as one of pop music's most commercially dominant young artists, garnering three Grammy Awards and an Album of the Year nomination for both of her previous albums.
