Nation Mourns: Arise News Anchor Sommie Maduagwu Brutally Killed in Abuja Robbery, Top Officials Demand Justice

The Nigerian media community and prominent national figures are in deep mourning following the tragic death of Ms. Somtochukwu ‘Sommie’ Maduagwu, a brilliant news anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News Channel. Maduagwu, 29, was killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025. Her untimely passing has sparked widespread condemnation and ignited renewed calls for urgent action against the escalating insecurity across the country.
According to reports, around 3 a.m. on Monday, approximately 15 armed robbers stormed Unique Apartments, a 16-apartment complex where Maduagwu resided. Witnesses from the apartment complex stated that security personnel raised an alarm and attempted to contact the police during the ongoing robbery but received no immediate response. Terrified by the commotion from adjoining flats, Maduagwu reportedly attempted to escape before the robbers reached her apartment by jumping out of her window, sustaining severe injuries from the fall. A security guard was also injured during the assault.
Both Somtochukwu Maduagwu and the injured security guard were rushed to Maitama District Hospital. While the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Mandate Secretary on Health, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, later clarified that Maduagwu was brought in dead to the hospital at about 4:30 a.m. on Monday, relatives alleged that they were initially denied urgent treatment due to the inability to immediately produce identification documents, a delay they believe contributed to their deaths. Both later succumbed to their injuries.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed profound sorrow upon receiving news of Maduagwu’s death, condemning it as a “cruel and condemnable manner” in which a promising professional journalist’s life was cut short. In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended condolences to her family, ARISE News Television, and the Nigerian media community. He directed security and law enforcement agencies to conduct a swift and thorough investigation to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice without delay, reiterating his administration’s commitment to strengthening security and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also mourned Maduagwu’s death, describing it as painful and unfortunate. She extended her condolences to ARISE News Chairman, Chief Nduka Obaigbena, and the deceased’s family, friends, and colleagues, expressing hope that the culprits would be swiftly brought to book. Similarly, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, conveyed his condolences, assuring that the police would unravel the circumstances surrounding her death and bring those responsible to justice. He described her passing as a tragic loss to the Nigerian media and the nation at large.
The FCT Police Command, through Commissioner of Police CP Ajao S. Adewale, extended heartfelt condolences and described the incident as a “cruel and senseless act.” CP Adewale has ordered a discreet and comprehensive investigation, deploying intelligence and operational assets to track and apprehend those responsible. He urged residents to provide timely and useful information to aid the investigation, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to public safety.
Beyond government officials, various groups and individuals have voiced their outrage and grief. ARISE News management described Maduagwu as a vibrant journalist whose passion and voice resonated strongly with viewers. Human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor criticized the Nigerian government, stating that Maduagwu’s death was a “national indictment” and a direct consequence of the State’s failure to protect lives and property, especially within the nation’s capital, Abuja. He linked her death to the broader collapse of security and questioned the cancellation of the 65th Independence Day Parade, suggesting it implied the government’s inability to guarantee safety even for its own events.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore berated the Nigeria Police Force for alleged negligence, citing reports that police failed to arrive on time and later claimed their patrol vehicle had no fuel to transport Maduagwu to the hospital while she was still alive. Sowore termed her death a glaring example of how “Nigeria kills its brightest” and broadened his criticism to the overall insecurity crisis. The Obidient Movement also condemned the killing as a tragic reminder of worsening insecurity, calling for a thorough investigation and government prioritization of citizen safety, especially for journalists.
Tributes poured in from other notable figures including Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo, and Minister of Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim. Civil society groups like ActionAid Nigeria and the League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja (LAJA) also expressed sorrow and called for justice. Somtochukwu Maduagwu, fondly known as “Sommie,” was a lawyer by training who pursued journalism as a passion, with colleagues remembering her as vibrant, industrious, and fearless. Her death has sparked a nationwide outcry, demanding swift justice and a fundamental overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture.
