Messenger Gets Creative: Boomerang & AR Camera Features Roll Out

Facebook Messenger has significantly enhanced its camera capabilities by introducing a suite of new features designed to make user communication more engaging and festive. These additions include the highly anticipated ‘Selfie’ and ‘Boomerang’ camera modes, alongside an expanded collection of augmented reality (AR) stickers and filters. The rollout aims to provide users with more dynamic and fun ways to interact, particularly during the holiday season.
The platform explicitly stated that these features were launched to enable users to enjoy sending messages during the festive period by utilizing various effects. A post from Messenger highlighted the popularity of camera effects, noting, “With more than 20 million people using camera effects on Messenger every day, we’re excited to be launching even more ways to make your seasonal messages fun, including two new modes in Messenger’s camera — Boomerang and Selfie, along with new AR stickers and holiday effects.”
Delving into the functionality, the ‘Boomerang’ camera mode allows users to record a short, looping video clip that plays forward and then reverses, creating a continuous, playful animation. This feature is already familiar to users of Instagram, another Facebook-owned platform. The ‘Selfie’ mode, on the other hand, is tailored for capturing portrait-style photographs. It smartly keeps the subject in sharp focus while subtly blurring the background, producing professional-looking shots directly within the app.
With these two innovative additions, Facebook Messenger now boasts a total of five camera modes. Prior to this update, users had access to Normal, Video, and Text camera modes, offering a solid foundation for diverse communication needs. The integration of Boomerang and Selfie modes further diversifies the creative tools available to users.
Beyond the new camera modes, Messenger has also bolstered its augmented reality capabilities. This feature allows users to seamlessly place Messenger’s diverse range of stickers directly into their photos and videos. These stickers can be pulled from existing chat conversations, adding a personalized and interactive layer to visual content. This augmented reality functionality helps to 'spice up' ordinary photos, transforming them into more expressive and entertaining messages.
These new Messenger features have been widely rolled out and are now accessible to users on both Android and iOS devices. Importantly, they are available across both Messenger’s recently redesigned application and its older version, ensuring a broad user base can immediately benefit from the updates without needing to switch app versions.
