Kyrie Irving's Grand Return: Mavs Star Dazzles in China Preseason Game!

Kyrie Irving made his much-anticipated return to professional basketball in a Dallas Mavericks preseason game against the Houston Rockets on Sunday night, held at the Venetian Arena in Macao, China. This marked Irving's first game in 586 days, following a prolonged recovery from a torn ACL in his left knee. The eight-time All-Star was met with a roaring sellout crowd, who enthusiastically welcomed him back onto the court. The Mavericks' coach, Dusty May, called the opening play for Irving, who promptly drove past Jabari Smith Jr. to execute a reverse layup, igniting celebrations from the Dallas bench and further cheers from the Chinese fans.

Irving reflected on the significant occasion, stating, "A lot of emotions leading into it. Grateful that Dusty [May] called the first play for me. Had my mind made up just to attack. ... I saw that baseline open up a little bit, and it just felt good to get that out of the way." He finished the game with an impressive 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting in just 22 minutes, contributing to the Mavericks' 132-115 victory. He also dished out three assists. Coach May expressed surprise at Irving's exceptional performance after such a long layoff, attributing it to his dedicated work ethic.

The 34-year-old Irving's last game action was on March 3, 2025, when he suffered the torn ACL in his left knee. This week, he also disclosed that a Grade 2 calf strain sustained in December further complicated his rehabilitation, ultimately leading to the decision to rule him out for the remainder of the season after the All-Star break. Houston Rockets coach Ime Udoka commented on Irving's comeback, noting, "He's back to being who he is. He'll only get better as he gets his rhythm back in real NBA games."

As part of the Mavericks' strategy to gradually reintroduce him to play, Irving had sat out the preseason opener on Friday. His return game also marked his first time playing alongside reigning Rookie of the Year, Cooper Flagg. The duo quickly demonstrated promising synergy with several highlight-reel plays. Early in the second quarter, Flagg delivered a full-court pass to Irving, who converted it into a transition layup. Later, in the third quarter, Flagg executed a spectacular chase-down block on Houston's Amen Thompson, sparking a fast break that Irving capped off with a pull-up 3-pointer.

Reflecting on his return, Irving shared his satisfaction: "Being able to perform at a high level, that felt amazing. I humbled myself while also just being aggressive and trying to look like myself again." Mavericks guard Max Christie also lauded Irving's performance, remarking, "That was really cool to see, to be able to witness that. He looked phenomenal. It was very, very fun to watch."
