European Giant Backs Morocco's Western Sahara Autonomy, Bolstering Diplomatic Ties

The Kingdom of Belgium has unequivocally reaffirmed its steadfast and consistent support for the Autonomy Initiative presented under Moroccan sovereignty. This significant diplomatic stance describes the initiative as “the most adequate, serious, credible, and realistic basis” for achieving a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable political resolution to the enduring regional dispute concerning the Sahara.

This pivotal position was officially articulated by Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Foreign Trade, Maxime Prévot. The announcement followed his productive meeting in Rabat with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, on Monday.

During their discussions, Mr. Prévot emphasized that Belgium’s articulated stance is in direct alignment with the Joint Declaration that was previously signed in Brussels on October 23, 2025. He acknowledged the profound, existential importance that this issue holds for the Kingdom of Morocco, firmly embedding the Sahara region within the immutable framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and national unity.

Further elaborating on Belgium’s commitment, the Belgian Foreign Minister stressed his intention to actively pursue this position across both diplomatic and economic spheres. He underscored that Belgium’s approach to the matter is entirely consistent with the principles of international law. As a tangible demonstration of this commitment, Mr. Prévot reiterated that the Belgian Ambassador to Rabat would soon receive an invitation to undertake a visit to the Sahara region.

The anticipated ambassadorial visit is specifically designed to prepare for and actively support various forthcoming economic initiatives. These initiatives are expected to include missions by Belgian companies seeking engagement in the region, alongside the organization of trade fairs. These endeavors will be executed in close collaboration with the three relevant regional agencies, fostering economic cooperation and development.

In relation to consular affairs, Belgium provided a clear clarification: its Consulate General in Rabat maintains jurisdiction over the entirety of the Kingdom of Morocco, explicitly without any regional distinction. This comprehensive jurisdiction therefore fully encompasses the Sahara region. This administrative clarification is pertinent for all Belgian nationals, whether they are residing permanently in the area or are simply travelling through it.

Mr. Prévot’s visit to Morocco serves as a powerful indicator of the current positive momentum characterizing the relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Kingdom of Belgium. These relations are marked by sustained and constructive political dialogue, underpinned by a shared determination to reinforce a strategic partnership that is firmly founded on mutual respect and a convergence of interests.
