BTS History Unveiled: The 'ARIRANG' Saga from Creation to Jin's Triumphant Return

K-pop sensation BTS has made a triumphant return to the global stage with their comeback album “ARIRANG,” which has not only dominated music charts but also launched an eagerly anticipated world tour. The tour kicked off with a spectacular performance at Goyang Stadium in South Korea, where member Jin expressed his joy, stating, “I had so much fun at Arirang Tour’s first concert. I feel comfortable performing as a team and being in the same space with ARMY, so I feel like I’m back home.” The Bangtan Boys are set to embark on an extensive global trek lasting through March of next year, with stops across North America, Latin America, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

“ARIRANG” quickly proved its immense popularity by debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated April 11) for a second consecutive week, marking BTS’s seventh No. 1 on the chart and their longest-running to date. The album’s lead focus track, “Swim,” also made a significant impact, launching at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This achievement made BTS the first group to debut an album and song atop both the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 simultaneously multiple times, echoing their success in 2020 with “Be” and “Life Goes On.” Furthermore, all 13 tracks from “ARIRANG,” with the exception of the bell interlude “No. 29,” charted on the Hot 100, and the group claimed the entire top 10 (and top 13) on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart. Alongside their chart success and tour, BTS has actively promoted this era with three music videos for “SWIM,” “2.0,” and “Hooligan,” and appearances on shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Wired, and Hot Ones.

Behind BTS’s monumental comeback is Bang Si-Hyuk, also known as Chairman Bang, the founder and chairman of HYBE. Chairman Bang, who originally assembled the band 13 years ago, maintained a close connection with the members even during their mandatory military service. He met with them frequently, discussing ideas for their return album. He described the project as one into which he “poured over a year and a half of [his] life and energy,” starting work on it at the members’ urging. The pressure of producing for such an iconic group was “immense,” emphasizing that authenticity and artistry were paramount, even while acknowledging the realities of performance metrics in popular music.

The planning for “ARIRANG” began well in advance of the members’ discharge. While they were fulfilling military duties, HYBE focused on company-level preparations, including song sourcing and shaping the creative and brand direction. Personal meetings with each member during their leaves helped understand their evolving thoughts. Early in 2025, Diplo was brought on as the lead producer. Two pre-song camps in Los Angeles yielded about 100 prototype tracks. After all members completed their service in July, a full-day workshop was held in Gyeonggi Province, where they intensely discussed what “BTS can do now, what BTS should do now, and ultimately what only BTS can do.”

The core identity of the album was unequivocally “BTS 2.0”—a declaration of a new chapter, not merely an extension of the past. Chairman Bang explained the musical essence as a journey to discover “If the BTS that released their debut album 2 Cool 4 Skool had grown with that same identity—without the genre variations or outward expansions of the past 13 years—what kind of music would they have created to lead the current era?” This vision led to an immediate full-scale song camp in Los Angeles, where members, despite personal plans for rest, canceled their schedules to dedicate themselves to the music. The initial two weeks had no strict guidelines, allowing for an organic narrowing of direction, eventually shaping a vague vision into 200 to 300 fully realized musical pieces. The scale of this song camp drew significant attention in the U.S. music industry, with many renowned producers eager to participate.

Reuniting with the members felt like no time had passed, an
