Burna Boy's Battle Royale: DJ Tunez Altercation Ignites Nigerian Music Industry Furore

A significant physical altercation involving Afrobeats star Burna Boy and Disc Jockey Michael Babatunde Adeyinka, widely known as DJ Tunez, has sparked widespread controversy within the Nigerian music industry. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, April 6, at "Obi's House," a popular weekly Afrobeats event in Lagos, leading to a heated argument that escalated into a physical confrontation.

Accounts from witnesses and DJ Tunez himself suggest that the dispute began when Burna Boy approached the DJ booth, either over the playing of Wizkid's music instead of his own, or an unauthorized unreleased track. DJ Tunez alleged that Burna Boy initiated the violence by hitting him in the back of the head, and that he was subsequently attacked by Burna Boy and approximately ten other men. Despite the alleged numerical disadvantage, DJ Tunez stated he "stood his ground" and defended himself, claiming Burna Boy "collected as well." Videos circulating online showed a chaotic scuffle, with security personnel attempting to restore order, and DJ Tunez briefly seen on the floor.

Afrobeats heavyweight Wizkid, with whom DJ Tunez is closely associated as his official DJ, publicly reacted to the incident. On Wednesday, April 8, Wizkid posted a strongly worded message on X, criticizing Burna Boy. He referred to Burna Boy as a "P***y nigga" for allegedly attacking a DJ with ten men, and further jabbed by calling him "Diddy's babe," referencing Burna Boy's friendship with Sean 'Diddy' Combs and ongoing internet jokes. DJ Tunez also took to X, labeling Burna Boy a "coward" and using the phrase "All Signs of Weakness," a clear twist on Burna Boy's album title 'No Sign of Weakness.'

Burna Boy appeared to respond to the allegations with a mocking video that surfaced on Wednesday. In the clip, he was seen dancing to DJ Tunez's song 'Money Constant,' featuring Wizkid, DJ Maphorisa, and Mavo. He pointedly changed the lyric "Ogbafia dey my side" to "Ogbafia dey for ground" and dramatically fell to the floor, widely interpreted as a direct jab at DJ Tunez being on the ground during the altercation.

The controversy was further complicated by conflicting statements from Nigerian DJ associations. Reports initially circulated that the Nigerian DJ Association (NDJ) had announced a temporary ban or boycott of Burna Boy's music from playlists, with statements posted on the NDJ's Instagram platform. However, the Deejays Association of Nigeria (DJAN), through its National President, Prince Akim Edeh, emphatically denied these reports, describing them as "false and misleading." DJAN condemned the unauthorized use of its logo to support such claims and clarified that it had no intention to ban Burna Boy's music or any other artist. DJAN also noted that DJ Tunez is not a registered member of their association and stated they are monitoring ongoing investigations into the incident, committed to fostering a healthy music environment.

This incident has intensified conversations within the Nigerian Afrobeats scene, drawing attention to underlying industry rivalries, particularly among the so-called "Big Three" – Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido – and the role of fan-driven narratives in escalating tensions. Ironically, both Wizkid and Burna Boy are scheduled to perform at the 2026 edition of Afro Nation Portugal, despite their recent collaboration history. The rivalry has often played out through social media comparisons and indirect comments.

As of this report, Burna Boy's management team has yet to issue any official statement regarding the incident. No formal complaint or police action has been reported, and the matter is currently being treated as a celebrity-related altercation at a private event.
