Bruno Mars' Romantic Latin Fusion: Mariachi Opener Steals the Show!

Billboard editors frequently spotlight uplifting moments across the Latin music landscape, encompassing everything from significant career milestones and fresh music releases to major announcements and intimate, important experiences. This week has been particularly vibrant, with notable achievements from Bruno Mars, Xavi, and Trueno, underscoring the genre's diverse and expanding influence.
Bruno Mars has made a highly anticipated return with his first solo album in a decade, titled The Romantic. The album strikingly opens with a mariachi bolero, “Risk It All,” a track that has garnered significant attention. Mars performs the song backed by a full mariachi ensemble, featuring traditional instruments like trumpets, violins, guitarrón, and vihuela. In the accompanying music video, co-directed by Mars and Daniel Ramos, the singer is elegantly dressed in a classic matador suit, strumming a nylon guitar in a dreamy, cinematic setting. The video showcases musicians performing against the backdrop of a vintage Catholic church bathed in golden hour light, transitioning into a heartfelt wedding scene. The lyrics, “I would run through the fire just to be by your side/ If your heart’s on the line you could take mine/ It’s crazy but it’s true/ There’s nothing I won’t do/ I’d risk it all for you,” portray a deeply lovelorn troubadour. This release has resonated strongly within the Latin community, drawing praise from figures like Rancho Humilde founder Jimmy Humilde, who expressed gratitude for Mars embracing Latin roots, and Fuerza Regida’s JOP, who hailed it as a historical moment highlighting the cultural richness of the United States.
Another monumental achievement in Latin music comes from Xavi, whose breakthrough hit “La Diabla” has officially joined Spotify’s esteemed Billions Club. The track has surpassed one billion streams, accumulating an impressive 1,002,857,857 plays and still counting. Since its release in November 2023, “La Diabla” rapidly transformed into a cultural phenomenon, quickly propelling the Mexican American singer-songwriter into widespread prominence by early 2024. This success led to Xavi securing his first No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart, an extraordinary accomplishment for a new artist. “La Diabla,” a corridos tumbados kiss-off, not only solidified Xavi’s position as a significant voice within the regional Mexican music wave but also cemented his status as a rising household name on a global scale.
Meanwhile, Argentine rapper Trueno has teamed up with the iconic Gorillaz on their new album, The Mountain. Trueno delivers a powerful Spanish-language rap performance on the track “The Manifesto,” also featuring the late Proof of D12. The song is characterized by Indian-leaning instrumentation and a haunting, beat-switching production that complements Trueno’s freewheeling verse, which explores profound themes of life, death, and ambition. This collaboration emerged from a 12-hour studio session with Damon Albarn, who subsequently invited Trueno to be an opening act for Gorillaz’s upcoming arena and stadium tour across England, Scotland, and Ireland, with stops planned in major cities like Manchester, Glasgow, and Dublin. Trueno expressed his excitement to Billboard, noting that he had never had the opportunity to perform in these countries before. The Gorillaz album also features other notable collaborations, including Bizarrap on “Orange County,” alongside Kara Jackson and Anoushka Shankar.
