Suspected terrorists have reportedly abducted several individuals, including a newly elected Vice Chairman and two councillors from Biu local government area in Borno State, alongside other unidentified passengers. The incident, which was initially reported on Wednesday, December 17, saw the elected politicians heading from Biu to Maiduguri when they were seized. Credible sources revealed that the abduction took place between Kamuya village and Buni Yadi road. Among the captives were Alhaji Saidu, the newly elected Vice Chairman, and two councillors representing Zarawuyaku and Miringa wards. It was also gathered that one of the abducted councillors had previously served as the immediate past vice chairman of Biu local government. Additionally, some unidentified passengers traveling in a Hizbah vehicle en route from Potiskum, Yobe state, to Biu were also taken.

Following the abductions, troops of the Nigerian Army, operating under Operation Hadin Kai, swiftly launched a search-and-rescue operation. This operation, spearheaded by troops from the 27 Task Force Brigade in conjunction with the 135 Special Forces Battalion and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), commenced at approximately 7:35 a.m. on Wednesday. This swift response came after the kidnapping of seven civilians, including the aforementioned officials, at about 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday along the perilous Buni Gari–Buratai road axis in Borno State.

The dedicated efforts of the security forces yielded immediate results. By approximately 11:35 a.m. on Wednesday, troops successfully located and rescued two of the kidnapped victims. These individuals had been abandoned by the terrorists upon sensing the approaching movement of the troops towards their location, ahead of Mangari village. The rescued victims were identified as Alhaji Mohammed Ali Maiakachi, who serves as a councillor representing the Zera/Wuyep Ward in Biu Local Government Area, and Mallam Aliyu Yusuf, a prominent Islamic scholar and Chairman of Shuaaraul Islam, Borno State. Upon their release, the victims were promptly taken to a medical reception station for necessary medical attention before being transported to Biu, where they were joyfully reunited with their families.

Despite this partial success, efforts to rescue the remaining captives are still ongoing. The rescued victims informed the troops that five other civilians remained in the custody of the terrorists. These remaining captives reportedly include both the immediate past and the current Vice Chairmen of Biu Local Government Area, as well as three women. The security source confirmed that the mission to secure the release of these remaining five civilians is being intensified.

These incidents highlight the persistent security challenges in the region, particularly along critical transportation routes. The approximately 120-kilometer road stretching from Biu-Buratai-Kamuya-Buni-Damaturu has long been recognized as a 'death trap,' with numerous reports of fatalities and abductions of individuals traveling along it. The continuous efforts by the Nigerian Army and local civilian forces underscore the commitment to ensuring safety and security for the populace in Borno State, even as they face the daunting task of rescuing all those held captive by the terrorist groups.
