Blockbuster Transfer! Rodri's Dream Move from Man City to Barcelona Shakes Up Football
Manchester City midfielder Rodri has arrived in Barcelona to finalize his €76.5 million transfer, a move he describes as a "dream come true." The World Cup winner, who had a decorated career with City, is eager to pursue new triumphs with the Catalan giants.Manchester City midfielder Rodri has arrived in Barcelona, poised to complete a significant €76.5 million (£65.3M) transfer to the Catalan giants. The 30-year-old expressed his immense joy, stating that the move to the Nou Camp was "a dream come true." The deal is anticipated to be finalized following his medical examination on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters upon his arrival at Barcelona's El Prat airport, Rodri conveyed his happiness: "I'm very happy to be here. It's been an intense few days, but I'm glad everything is sorted out. Playing for Barcelona is a dream come true for me. I'm really looking forward to being with my teammates, most of whom I already know from the national team, so now it's time to work hard and give my best. We're going for the Champions League, we're going for everything that comes our way."
Rodri, who recently lifted the World Cup with Spain, was in the final year of his contract at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium. He had attracted considerable interest from both Barcelona and their fierce rivals, Real Madrid. Barcelona had initially seen a €50 million offer rejected last week, and a subsequent increased bid also failed before an agreement was finally reached on Sunday. If his medical proceeds as planned, Rodri's signing could be officially announced later the same day, with a formal presentation scheduled for Wednesday.
Manchester City had made efforts to retain their key midfielder, with manager Enzo Maresca praising him as a "top player" and asserting that "all the teams need Rodri" after the Community Shield. However, City were ultimately unsuccessful in persuading their linchpin to sign a new contract and extend his stay.
Rodri had only recently rejoined City on Friday, having undergone back surgery following the World Cup. The former Atletico Madrid player spent seven seasons with Manchester City, during which he won the Premier League four times. He also famously scored the decisive goal in their 2023 Champions League final victory against Inter Milan. The following year, he was awarded the Ballon d'Or, though by the time of its presentation, he was sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which kept him out for most of the 2024-25 campaign. Further hamstring and groin issues subsequently restricted him to just 33 appearances during Pep Guardiola's final season in charge.
Manchester City has already seen significant changes in their midfield this summer, investing €135 million in Elliot Anderson and agreeing to sell Tijjani Reijnders to Al Qadisah. The club has also been linked with potential moves for Lille star Ayyoub Bouaddi and Chelsea's Enzo Fernández.
