Beloved Voice of Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen, Passes Away at 85
Renowned voice actor Peter Cullen, best known as the iconic voice of Optimus Prime, has passed away at 85. His illustrious career spanned decades, bringing to life characters like Venger, the Predator, and Eeyore, leaving an indelible mark on animation and pop culture.
The animation world mourns the loss of Peter Cullen, the iconic voice actor whose powerful and resonant tones defined beloved characters for decades. Cullen passed away at the age of 85, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy, most notably as the gallant Autobot leader, Optimus Prime, from the legendary Transformers franchise.
Peter Claver Cullen was born in Montreal, Quebec, on July 28, 1941. His journey into entertainment began in radio and television comedy, with early appearances on popular shows like The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. His distinctive deep voice quickly made him a sought-after announcer, naturally paving his way into the world of voice acting.
Cullen's versatility was evident in his early voice roles, which included portraying the formidable villain Venger on Dungeons & Dragons, delivering the terrifying roars of the titular monster in the 1976 remake of King Kong, and lending his voice to multiple characters on Voltron: Defender of the Universe.
In 1984, Cullen's career took a monumental turn when he auditioned for the role that would become his signature: Optimus Prime. For the heroic Autobot leader, Cullen drew inspiration from his own brother, Larry, a respected captain in the Marine Corps. This heartfelt portrayal resonated deeply, securing him the role not only of Optimus Prime but also of Prime's Southern-accented aide, Ironhide. He voiced Optimus Prime across two episodes of the animated series and in the theatrical Transformers: The Movie, where the character met a poignant end in a final confrontation with Megatron, voiced by Cullen's longtime friend, Frank Welker. Unbeknownst to Cullen, the public's outcry and outpouring of support for Prime's return quickly led to the character's resurrection.
Cullen would later reprise his iconic role as Optimus Prime in seven live-action films, beginning with the 2007 blockbuster Transformers, and also lent his voice to the character in three subsequent animated series, firmly cementing his place in pop culture history.
Beyond the realm of Transformers, Cullen crafted other unforgettable vocalizations. He was enlisted to provide the unique alien sounds for the title creature in the 1987 film Predator. Initially, producers expected typical roars, but after recording extensive ape birthing noises for King Kong Lives, Cullen's voice was strained. Upon seeing the then-top-secret design of the creature, which reminded him of an upturned horseshoe crab, Cullen ingeniously devised the distinctive pops and clicks that have defined the Predator's vocal identity for decades.
Following his work on Transformers, Cullen became a part of another cherished childhood franchise, lending his melancholic voice to the character of Eeyore in The New Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh and several subsequent projects. In recent years, in addition to his ongoing Transformers work, he made appearances in multiple episodes of Prime Video's Invincible, once again sharing the screen with Frank Welker.
Peter Cullen is survived by his four children and three grandchildren. Collider extends its deepest sympathies to Cullen's family and friends, and to all those whose lives were touched by his extraordinary work.
