AI Unicorn Anthropic Secures Staggering $65 Billion Funding, IPO Looms

Anthropic, a prominent AI startup, has successfully closed its latest Series H funding round, securing an impressive $65 billion. This significant investment values the company at a staggering $965 billion post-money, a move widely considered to be its final private fundraising endeavor before potentially entering the public markets through an Initial Public Offering (IPO).
The Series H round saw robust participation from a consortium of leading investors. It was co-led by several distinguished firms, including Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, Sequoia Capital, Capital Group, Coatue, and D1 Capital Partners. Additionally, a diverse group of institutional investors contributed to the round, such as Baillie Gifford, Blackstone, Brookfield, D.E. Shaw Ventures, DST Global, and Fidelity Management & Research. The funding round also attracted strategic infrastructure partners, with Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron joining the list of investors. A notable portion of this funding, specifically $15 billion, comprises previously committed investments from hyperscalers, including a $5 billion contribution from Amazon announced in April.
Reports prior to the closing of this round indicated intense investor interest, with Anthropic reportedly nearing a $50 billion raise and institutional investors eager to secure a position on its cap table. One institutional investor was even prepared to pledge $5 billion simply to arrange a meeting with Anthropic's CFO, Krishna Rao.
Anthropic has outlined its strategic allocation for these newly acquired funds, focusing on several key areas. The company plans to significantly advance its safety and interpretability research, expand its compute capacity to meet the rapidly growing demand for its AI model Claude, and scale the products and partnerships that are crucial for its customer base. This funding announcement coincided with the release of Anthropic's new Claude Opus 4.8 model, which boasts enhanced capabilities in agentic tasks, sophisticated coding, and an increased emphasis on honesty and self-correction. Furthermore, the AI startup is reportedly preparing for a broader launch of models on par with its powerful cybersecurity model, Mythos, which has previously been released in a limited fashion due to potential safety concerns.
The company has experienced substantial growth since its previous funding round, particularly noting increased adoption among enterprise customers who rely heavily on its Claude Code. Anthropic's run rate revenue crossed $47 billion earlier this month, and The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the startup anticipates a 130% revenue surge, which is expected to lead to its first operating profit. Brad Gerstner, Founder and CEO of Altimeter Capital, remarked on this momentum, stating, “Claude’s latest advancements have driven large-scale adoption among the world’s most demanding organizations. This momentum positions Anthropic to lead the next phase of AI innovation and capture the enormous opportunity ahead.”
Anthropic remains in fierce competition with OpenAI, not only in terms of fundraising but also in user growth, as both companies prepare for their respective IPOs. Earlier this year, OpenAI conducted its own significant funding round in March, raising $122 billion at an $852 billion post-money valuation. In the broader tech landscape, Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which merged with xAI earlier this year, is targeting an ambitious $2 trillion valuation in its pending IPO and is actively seeking to raise more than $75 billion.
