Six serving members of the Zamfara House of Assembly, previously affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have announced their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This significant political move was described by the Zamfara State chapter of the APC as a welcome development and a good omen for the party, according to a statement issued in Gusau on Friday by the State APC publicity secretary, Yusuf Idris.

The defecting lawmakers made their decision known through separate letters presented to the APC leadership. These six individuals were part of a parallel state house of assembly faction and had been suspended by the main house last year due to alleged violations of the Nigerian Constitution and the state assembly’s laws.

During their announcement in Gusau, the state capital, the lawmakers collectively stated their reasons for leaving the PDP. They cited alleged poor management of the legislative arm, claiming it had compromised its duties by serving as an extension of the Governor’s Office and acting as a rubber stamp to Governor Dauda Lawal.

The group of defecting lawmakers includes prominent figures such as the factional Speaker, Bashar Aliyu (Gummi 1), Nasiru Abdullahi (Maru North), and Bashir Abubakar (Bukkuyum North). Additionally, Bashir Bello (Bungudu West), Amiru Ahmad-Keta (Tsafe West), and Muktar Nasir-Kaura (Kaura North) are among those who joined the APC.

In light of their grievances, the lawmakers urged the National Assembly to investigate their case thoroughly and to take appropriate steps to ensure that order and the rule of law are fully adhered to within the state legislature. They further explained their decision to join the opposition APC in Zamfara, highlighting attractions such as justice, fair play, harmony, and inclusiveness. Their stated goal is to work for the growth and development of the state and the welfare of their constituents under the APC banner.

Yusuf Idris, the state APC publicity secretary, formally congratulated the new members, expressing hope that their decision would mark the beginning of success and development for Zamfara State and Nigeria at large. He reiterated that the party views the lawmakers’ decision as a wise one, poised to promote the political stability of the nation. Idris concluded by stating that the collective defection marks a new political era in Zamfara, where members of the ruling party are now joining the opposition, thereby changing traditional political dynamics.
